Wed, 16 Jan 2013 17:56:06 -0800 Apple online store lets Chinese buy on a two-year plan, puts iPads within reach http://yvinedep.posterous.com/apple-online-store-lets-chinese-buy-on-a-two http://yvinedep.posterous.com/apple-online-store-lets-chinese-buy-on-a-two

iPad mini at Beijing's Wangfujing store

Apple has repeatedly stressed that China is important to its bottom line, but it faces a dilemma given the premium associated with its name: when it can take weeks' worth of typical pay to buy an iOS device, let alone a Mac, many locals either have to save up or else turn to alternatives. The company may not have truly low-cost devices -- at least, not yet -- but it is offering an olive branch in the form of installment plans. Chinese who order from the online Apple Store with a China Merchants Bank credit card can now buy virtually anything priced between ?300 and ?30,000 ($48 to $4,821) using up to 24 payments spread over two years. Much like in other countries, there's higher additional fees the longer the installments carry on. The strategy only helps a certain segment of the population for whom the up-front cost is the lone obstacle; that may be enough in the near future, though, given that there's still significant demand.

Wed, 16 Jan 2013 16:09:19 -0800 Mathematical breakthrough sets out rules for more effective teleportation http://yvinedep.posterous.com/mathematical-breakthrough-sets-out-rules-for http://yvinedep.posterous.com/mathematical-breakthrough-sets-out-rules-for

Jan. 16, 2013 ? For the last ten years, theoretical physicists have shown that the intense connections generated between particles as established in the quantum law of 'entanglement' may hold the key to eventual teleportation of quantum information.

Now, for the first time, researchers have worked out how entanglement could be 'recycled' to increase the efficiency of these connections. Published in the journal Physical Review Letters, the result could conceivably take us a step closer to sci-fi style teleportation in the future, although this research is purely theoretical in nature.

The team have also devised a generalised form of teleportation, which allows for a wide variety of potential applications in quantum physics.

Once considered impossible, in 1993 a team of scientists calculated that teleportation could work in principle using quantum laws. Quantum teleportation harnesses the 'entanglement' law to transmit particle-sized bites of information across potentially vast distances in an instant.

Entanglement involves a pair of quantum particles such as electrons or protons that are intrinsically bound together, retaining synchronisation between the two that holds whether the particles are next to each other or on opposing sides of a galaxy. Through this connection, quantum bits of information -- qubits -- can be relayed using only traditional forms of classical communication.

Previous teleportation protocols, have fallen into one of two camps, those that could only send scrambled information requiring correction by the receiver, or more recently, "port-based" teleportation that doesn't require a correction, but needed an impractical amount of entanglement -- each object sent would destroy the entangled state.

Now, physicists from Cambridge, University College London, and the University of Gdansk have developed a protocol to provide an optimal solution in which the entangled state is 'recycled', so that the gateway between particles holds for the teleportation of multiple objects.

They have even devised a protocol in which multiple qubits can be teleported simultaneously, although the entangled state degrades proportionally to the amount of qubits sent in both cases.

"The first protocol consists of sequentially teleporting states, and the second teleports them in a bulk," said Sergii Strelchuck from Cambridge's Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, who led the research with colleagues Jonathan Oppenheim of Cambridge and UCL and Michal Horodecki of the University of Gdansk.

"We have also found a generalised teleportation technique which we hope will find applications in areas such as quantum computation."

Einstein famously loathed the theory of quantum entanglement, dismissing it as "spooky action at a distance." But entanglement has since been proven to be a very real feature of our universe, and one that has extraordinary potential to advance all manner of scientific endeavor.

"There is a close connection between teleportation and quantum computers, which are devices which exploit quantum mechanics to perform computations which would not be feasible on a classical computer," said Strelchuck.

"Building a quantum computer is one of the great challenges of modern physics, and it is hoped that the new teleportation protocol will lead to advances in this area."

While the Cambridge physicists' protocol is completely theoretical, last year a team of Chinese scientists reported teleporting photons over 143km, breaking previous records, and quantum entanglement is increasingly seen as an important area of scientific investment. Teleportation of information carried by single atoms is feasible with current technologies, but the teleportation of large objects -- such as Captain Kirk -- remains in the realm of science fiction.

Adds Strelchuck: "Entanglement can be thought of as the fuel, which powers teleportation. Our protocol is more fuel efficient, able to use entanglement thriftily while eliminating the need for error correction."

Tue, 15 Jan 2013 22:32:18 -0800 Two Independent Woman I love The Most | All About Education http://yvinedep.posterous.com/two-independent-woman-i-love-the-most-all-abo http://yvinedep.posterous.com/two-independent-woman-i-love-the-most-all-abo

This morning I started from home took my car and started driving to office. At a signal I was thinking about writing a post for ini and that very moment I remembered the two weeks time I spent with family for a special occasion and those memories filled my eyes and I couldn?t stop writing this post.

Couple of months before when I called mom, she said that some family is coming to ask my sister for marriage. I am too choosy when it comes to marriage and said no to last few proposals because of education and other factors about guys. My relatives hate me for that. But my mother understand what I am saying. My sister is a medical practitioner and worked really hard to be best in her studies. I told my mom that the best suite for her is a medical practitioner or an average engineer who is ready to accept challenge and courageous to stand by right in all means adn matters. Because I feel that competition (professional, social, economical,..etc) and jealousy in married couple would lead to bad family life. A guy who understand others and provide equal and good opportunity to grow need guts and courage in super successful marriage. Truly speaking its real sprit of marriage in Islam, equality n simplicity and I was just asking for that.

Next day when I called mom, she was happy and started talking about how everything is and getting planed. I just asked her to wait for a minute and asked what does my sister think about it. Mom asked me to ask myself because I am more open and close to my sister than others in family. She said, she did istikhara (seeking opinion from Allah SWT) and feel comfortable with it. I asked her again he is an engineer, have you thought about it. She said I feel comfortable. I congratulated her and asked her to send his details to me so that I can see how he is. Tech world is so small for me.

I talked to mom congratulated her and asked her to start moving ahead with official things like dates of marriage and Mahar (it is a right that is given to the woman, as enjoined by Islamic sharee?ah, as an expression of the man?s desire to marry her). We dont go into too many details to keep things as simple as possible. My dad and mom went to boys home and decided all things in one go and thats it. My sister was graduating in two months and third month her marriage was fixed.

My dad went back to Saudi for his work, I am in South Korea for work, others are busy with their work. My family is totally independent, everyone did their work till now, like admissions, study and other things. Don?t expect anything from anyone, it?s your work you should do it. Mom takes care of overall need of family and manages finances. Dad make money for family and make big decisions. Whole family runs in this ecosystem. But this is first marriage at home, but I felt we are same again. Its her marriage she will tell what and how to do. If she ask me I will try to do otherwise let her do on her own.

Mom and sister did everything together, everything mean everything you can imagine in marriage. They both bought cloth, mom stitched at home (because tailors don?t fit her standard of stitching cloth), sister ironed them and packed them. They made list of invitees, made invitation card on her own, corrected ordered and she distributed on her own. All on her own with mom.

I was first to reach home (just a week before). I am lazy and gave all lazy and easy to do ideas. I went with sister to post office to post rest of the invitations we wanted to send to her friends and our relatives. Did little bit of shopping. I kept talking to her and telling her my experience in life and always asking her to be patience and encourage her husband. I know she is a super girl, highly educated, super cool with religion and a great doctor. I was thinking about her husband, how can he handle all that. She will be more popular and in focus because of her professional and personal nature.

I thought to meet the hero before marriage so that I can understand how he is and how he can handle things ahead. Fortunately his father called us to meet and discuss things about marriage day and also informed about that his son is in the city. After night prayers I took my lovely brother and visited their home. We all hugged each other, and as this was my first visit their home the boys dad introduced all family members to me and then we sat and talk. I asked few things and loved the way he answered, I tried to see myself a couple of years back I would have did the same thing and answered same way. I was super happy and felt I got someone who can stand with me to inspire the world again. With little encouragement he will be doing great. I went home and started teasing sister.

Marriage plan was simple, formalities will be done at home after asr (prayer at 4PM) and khutaba nikah will be at masjid then the boy and his family would take their daughter in law. We agreed and returned home. After coming home mom said, do ask them to have dinner with us before they take our daughter. My brother said okie and then called them, he is like little father in family. They agreed to join us for dinner that night.

On the day of marriage, after the Asr prayers we started running, my brother called Qazi (incharge of islamic affairs) he came with papers and forms, and started filling them. When we completed formalities in men?s section ( which was our first floor) we moved to woman section (second floor of my home) to ask my sister about proposal and take her sign on marriage papers. The Qazi asked father to go with witnesses, I went up as I was witness.

Every step I climbed, I was lost in memories, how we grew up, how I used to carry her when she was young, and I used to avoid her when she cried because she was heavy. How I used to leave her in one place fixed to make sure she dont move and I go on play. How I was looking for MBBS admissions and how she moved for the first time to prepare for medical exam. How hard it was for her to stay in a new place for MBBS and how independently she did all. Stood as a good muslima, protected her and did great in her studies. She not only did hijab but complete her niqab and does everything to its perfection.

My little brother is a strong man, loved him for it. As my sister took pen to sign on papers she started crying, my mom was already crying, I am weak and love to cry, so I was just waiting to start. My eyes are still filled as I write this. My brother, sat on bed with pen and papers, asked her to sign no emotion totally perfect with that. Hugged her and said congratulations and told me lets go give this papers down so that we can start for masjid. Woow what a strength. I hugged my sister cried a bit and controlled a lot to make sure everyone is ok. My brother did the real magic, he common lets go it?s not time cry, she is not going anywhere, she was your daughter, is and will be. Just a more family added you got a son now. And bro. Zahid dont try to cry and you can not as its not your marriage. When you get married, I dont know how to handle your cry : D, all of a suddent everyone laughed including my sister. I said ok okie lets go.

Marriage happened at home with family members and relative and almost ten woman from boys side. We all had dinner together and they took her with her. I was just like a family gathering and totally on islamic norms. No useless expenses and no too much of show offs and no issues thanks to Allah and to the stand of the guy getting married. He did it the right way one good muslim should do. I buy good stuff for himself and his wife and took her with pride.

I was just thinking about my mom, who got my sister after three crazy boys, took care of her and she became her strength and in no time she was leaving her. She lost her friend, her family doctor, teacher for her younger children and a great moral support from around her. I wished I could be her daughter for rest of my her life. One independent woman, whose husband left her 24 yrs back for searching a life for family. Since then she took care of every single child she have and the family of her husband. Made sure that all them become educated, simple and contribute to the growth of world and make human life easier than before. She is real example for me to understand and see the result of constant effort and being patience for results to come. We all grownup got phds, doctors and show courage for biggest projects in the world but her effort, courage, patience and support make it look like nothing at all.

My mom and sister are two independent woman I have ever met in my life. As she was leaving home said to me, I am leaving you now you go to find someone who understand the idea of your world, bold and courageous, who can stand with you rest of life. And I pray for you to get the best in the world. I said you were my weakness, I kept comparing and leaving girls, now as you are not here I will find one who will replace you in a better way. We smiled and moved on in our lives.

I wish I could write more about them. But limitations of time busy life style is limiting it but I keep my memories for future, where I can compile them in a tale or novel. When I remember all this, my eyes fill with tears and my hurt pray for every single simple, independent girl to get a great family, that supports her, care for her and encourage her to move ahead in life in her husband and in her in laws.

This post is bit off the track but it?s a part of my personal life and I love to share it here at ini, because it?s my home too, with a larger family. I wish success to all its residents as I expect for my family. I pray and ask you all to pray for my and my sisters family for blessing and happiness.

Tue, 15 Jan 2013 18:56:12 -0800 Who decides in the brain? How decision-making processes are influenced by neurons http://yvinedep.posterous.com/who-decides-in-the-brain-how-decision-making http://yvinedep.posterous.com/who-decides-in-the-brain-how-decision-making

Jan. 15, 2013 ? T?bingen neuroscientists have shown how decision-making processes are influenced by neurons.

Whether in society or nature, decisions are often the result of complex interactions between many factors. Because of this it is usually difficult to determine how much weight the different factors have in making a final decision. Neuroscientists face a similar problem since decisions made by the brain always involve many neurons. Working in collaboration, the University of T?bingen and the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, supported within the framework of the Bernstein Network, researchers lead by CIN professor Matthias Bethge have now shown how the weight of individual neurons in the decision-making process can be reconstructed despite interdependencies between the neurons.

When we see a person on the other side of the street who looks like an old friend, the informational input enters the brain via many sensory neurons. But which of these neurons are crucial in passing on the relevant information to higher brain areas, which will decide who the person is and whether to wave and say 'hello'? A research group lead by Matthias Bethge has now developed an equation that allows them to calculate to what degree a given individual sensory neuron is involved in the decision process.

To approach this question, researchers have so far considered the information about the final decision that an individual sensory neuron carries. Just as an individual is considered suspicious if he or she is found to have insider information about a crime, those sensory neurons whose activity contains information about the eventual decision are presumed to have played a role in reaching the final decision. The problem with this approach is that neurons -- much like people -- are constantly communicating with each other. A neuron which itself is not involved in the decision may simply have received this information from a neighboring neuron and "joined in" the conversation. Actually, the neighboring cell sends out the crucial signal transmitted to the higher decision areas in the brain.

The new formula that has been developed by scientists addresses this by accounting not just for the information in the activity of any one neuron but also for the communication that takes place between them. This formula will now be used to determine whether only a few neurons that carry a lot of information are involved in the brain's decision process, or whether the information contained in very many neurons gets combined. In particular, it will be possible to address the more fundamental question: In which decisions does the brain use information in an optimal way, and for which decisions is its processing suboptimal?

Mon, 14 Jan 2013 21:48:10 -0800 China to Pay "Great Importance" to Ties With India: Xi http://yvinedep.posterous.com/china-to-pay-great-importance-to-ties-with-in http://yvinedep.posterous.com/china-to-pay-great-importance-to-ties-with-in

China's new leader Xi Jinping has assured Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that Beijing would continue to pay "great importance" to develop relations with India as the bilateral cooperation has brought "substantial benefit" to people of both nations.

"China will, as it has been doing, pay great importance to developing relations with India and expects to carry out close cooperation with India to create a brighter future of their of their bilateral relations," Xi wrote in a letter to Singh which was delivered to him by top Chinese diplomat Dai Bingguo on January 11 in New Delhi.

"China-India relations have maintained stable development in the past few years, which has brought about substantial benefits to the two countries and the two peoples," state-run Xinhua news agency quoted Xi as saying.

The world has enough space for China and India to achieve common development, and the world also needs common development, he said.

Dai, the chief negotiator of the India-China border talks was in New Delhi last week to attend the Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa (BRICS) top security officials meeting.

Xi's letter was stated to be in response to a letter from Singh after his election as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) succeeding Hu Jintao.

Singh's letter conveying his greetings to the new Chinese leadership as well as assurance to carry forward the relations was handed over by National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon last month when he visited Beijing.

Dai would be retiring from the post of State Councillor and top diplomat of the China after a decade during which he held 15 rounds of talks with Menon and several of his predecessors.

Sun, 13 Jan 2013 17:02:09 -0800 what yesterday's head/parapet blog and the comments below have ... http://yvinedep.posterous.com/what-yesterday39s-headparapet-blog-and-the-co http://yvinedep.posterous.com/what-yesterday39s-headparapet-blog-and-the-co

A really good explanation of the meaning of cis, thanks to queeriodical (see comments below head/parapet, about 10 comments down)

A reminder that twitter is a public forum and that everything is seen by everyone who wants to and (any of our) dark humour/offhand remarks may not be read in the tone they may have been intended. I?d rather that didn?t stop people posting occasionally raging remarks, of any kind, from any part of the political spectrum, I think the debate sparked by raging remarks can be really useful. But it does make me stop and wonder how free I personally will choose to be on twitter in future.

That asking people to please identify themselves, by their own names (if at all possible), as I do on my blog, twitter, and facebook, elicits some lovely honesty, both in people using their own names and in explaining why they are not. And some total disregard for that request.

That my saying I often find academic terms alienating and difficult seems to have caused some people upset. I was the first in my (extended) family to go to university. Therefore, when I left home at 17 to do so, I was the first person I ever knew to go to university. It was terrifying. (And exciting, of course, but mostly terrifying.) I found very quickly that there was a huge world of middle class people I knew nothing about and who knew far more about how we were ?supposed? to be at university, in studying and in life, than I did. I felt like a fish out of water. I was lost. And then I found some similar friends, also lost fishes, and we formed our own group of lost people and made our way through together. I got a pretty shitty degree because I was really only interested in the two drama papers I was able to do and in making theatre at every opportunity ? when I wasn?t doing that I was working (coffee shop at 6am, washing dishes at 10pm, and sometimes cleaning houses in between) to pay to be at university. It was only in the last few years that it finally occurred to me that the kids from wealthier families weren?t working part time as me and my mates were because their parents were paying their rent, paying for their books, giving them allowances ? this honestly had never occurred to me until about 5 years ago! I don?t say that as a sob story, working part time while studying and full time in the holidays was standard for the group who became my university friends (also working class kids who were, according to their families, ?making good?). I am a little surprised when people are dismissive of these honestly-expressed fears, and call it ?academic-bashing? (as has been said on twitter). Frankly it feels quite brave for me to say I find some of the discussion hard to follow, it?s taken me until almost 50 to publicly admit this, and I absolutely believe it is to do with my upbringing and the working class parents who brought me up who felt that higher education (their term) was for me, perhaps, but not for them.
I understand that access to university and tertiary education has made huge leaps (in the UK and NZ, the only two countries I know about from personal experience) in the past 30 years, and so it is possible my fears and feeling of alienation are not experienced by working class young people today. Possible. I find it a little odd that admitting to (what I perceive to be) class-based insecurity should be so easily dismissed by those who have said ?it?s easy to look it up?. I agree, looking stuff up IS easy. Feeling free with terms, feeling as if one fully understands them, ?gets? them, is another matter entirely.

That I?ve written many many times before, on this blog, about LGBT issues (about my belief that everyone has a duty to come out for eg, which sometimes has been read as a provocative stance), about class issues, about race issues, and about this government and others. About war, about rape, about violence against women. And I have NEVER had this much response ever before about any of these other issues. Which I find a little sad. I think all these issues, including the one discussed below, are hugely important and I wish they ALL stirred the same depth of feeling.

That there may well be a huge difference between younger and older feminists. The younger feminists responding to me expressed surprise (some politely, some not at all!) that certain terms and writers were new to me. And the ones who suggested I had a lot of reading to do to catch up are probably right. I?d also suggest that older feminists (including the women a good 30 years older than me, in my mere middle age!) are also worth listening to, and that any catching up might be two or three way, rather than just us older ones reading what the younger ones are reading. I?m hoping to begin work on a theatre project about older women as Elders in the next few months, and I?m really excited about the possibilities that discourse with and listening to women 10, 20 and 30 years older than me might bring.

That not any one person ever speaks for any one group. As evidenced by the varied views from people identifying as trans in the comments, and the varied views from people identifying as left ? but taking different stances ? also in the comments. I think we?d all do well to try to remember this more. I try to write and speak as if I am only speaking for myself, from my own experiences and pov, I will make more of an effort to do so in future.

That I do believe dialogue is the only way forward. Ever.

That I?m glad I have my Buddhist practice to remind me both to listen and to try to be compassionate ? AND to speak from my heart when I feel moved to do so.

I?m really grateful for ALL of your responses. I have been trying to approve the comments as they come in, and have been doing so since they began rushing in last night, both here and on twitter. But I?m now back to writing a new novel at the same time as directing a play, so please be patient if your comment doesn?t appear as soon as it is posted. (As ever, I reserve the right to NOT approve a comment I think may be offensive, but I have never done so yet, and you?ll see there are plenty disagreeing with me!, so as long as we stay off the name-calling and swearing, I think we?ll all be fine.)

And finally, a plug. Here?s the book I mention in the blog below that?s been so widely read. Now that you know it contains a trans character, a major plot twist is already given away. Sorry about that. It was written from 1995, published in 1997, so I?m sure it?s fairly out of date about many things now, not least the lack of twitter!
Anyway, I also use my blog and twitter and facebook to promote my work ? this is Beneath the Blonde.

Sun, 13 Jan 2013 00:36:23 -0800 California Attorney General Issues Privacy Guidelines for Mobile App Developers http://yvinedep.posterous.com/california-attorney-general-issues-privacy-gu http://yvinedep.posterous.com/california-attorney-general-issues-privacy-gu

California Attorney General Kamala Harris today issued consumer privacy guidelines for mobile application developers.

The 22-page report, called Privacy on the Go: Recommendations for the Mobile Ecosystem, has suggestions for app developers to show consumers the required privacy policy; for example, the report recommends using small icons or pop-ups to inform consumers how the developer will use the information.

Attorney General Kamala D. Harris. Photo courtesy of the California Office of the Attorney General.

?Today, 85 percent of American adults own a cell phone and over half of them use their phones to access the Internet. The mobile app marketplace is also booming with more than 1,600 new mobile apps being introduced every day. These apps allow us to do everything from streaming movies to hailing a cab to viewing our own X-ray and ultrasound images,? said Harris in the report. ?Along with the many wonderful capabilities these apps offer, we remain mindful that the mobile environment also poses uncharted privacy challenges.?

The report was criticized by representatives of Internet and media associations for not adequately getting input for the report from companies and consumers.

?We are disappointed that the California Attorney General would finalize a recommendation on such an important issue based on such limited engagement with the companies that will be expected to put them into practice,? said Mike Zaneis, Senior Vice President for Public Policy at the Interactive Advertising Bureau, in a statement.

The office engaged a ?broad spectrum? of stakeholders to arrive at the recommendations, according to the report.

Last year after creating the Privacy Enforcement and Protection Unit within the state Department of Justice, Harris forged an agreement with Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft and Research in Motion to display app privacy policies that users could easily review before downloading apps.

In October, the Attorney General began to formally notify application developers and companies that have been accused violating California privacy law. The office then filed a privacy lawsuit against Delta Airlines in December for allegedly violating California?s privacy laws by failing to conspicuously post a privacy policy related to the airline?s mobile app that collects user data, including GPS data, Delta SkyMiles account number and flight information, passport number, and credit card number and expiration date.

From the Attorney General?s report, recommendations include:

For App Developers

  • Start with a data checklist to review the personally identifiable data your app cold collect and use it to make decisions on your privacy practices.
  • Avoid or limit collecting personally identifiable data not needed for you app?s basic functionality.
  • Develop a privacy policy that is clear, accurate, and conspicuously accessible to users and potential users.
  • Use enhanced measures ? ?special notices? or the combination of a short privacy statement and privacy controls ? to draw users? attention to data practices that may be unexpected and to enable them to make meaningful choices.

For App Platform Providers

  • Make app privacy policies accessible from the app platform so that they may be reviewed before a user downloads an app.
  • Use the platform to education users on mobile privacy.

For Mobile Ad Networks

  • Avoid using out-of-app ads that are delivered by modifying browser settings or placing icons on the mobile desktop.
  • Have a privacy policy and provide it to the app developers who will enable the delivery of targeted ads through your network.
  • Move away from the use of interchangeable device-specific or temporary device identifiers.

For Operating System Developers

  • Develop global privacy settings that allow users to control the data and device features accessible to apps.

For Mobile Carriers

  • Leverage your ongoing relationship with mobile customers to educate them on mobile privacy and particularly on children?s privacy.

Sat, 12 Jan 2013 22:47:15 -0800 George P. Bush prepares for statewide run in Texas http://yvinedep.posterous.com/george-p-bush-prepares-for-statewide-run-in-t http://yvinedep.posterous.com/george-p-bush-prepares-for-statewide-run-in-t

George Prescott Bush, son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, told the Associated Press on Friday that he will run for statewide office in Texas in 2014 - but he's not quite sure which office he'll seek just yet.

"We are for sure running, the question is the office," said Bush, a 36-year old attorney from Fort Worth. He indicated that he is waiting to hear of Texas Gov. Rick Perry's plan before deciding on a path of his own.

Perry, who has been governor since former President George W. Bush left Texas for the White House in 2001, has not yet indicated whether he will run for reelection again.

Some have speculated that Bush might mount a primary challenge to Perry, but Bush provided no such hint in the interview, saying that "we want to be team players in the party, providing a younger, fresher vision for our values."

Bush is thought to be eyeing the post of Texas Land Commissioner most closely - a low profile but powerful post that has provided a valuable stepping stone for several previous Texas governors. He may also run for state attorney general if the current officeholder, Greg Abbott, decides to run for governor himself.

Some Texas conservatives see Bush, who speaks fluent Spanish and is biracial (his mother is from Mexico), as a valuable liaison to the Hispanic community in Texas, which has trended strongly Democratic in recent elections.

Despite the high hopes, Bush cautions that his party can't assume that his heritage will win Hispanic votes for the GOP. "I don't necessarily agree with the idea that having a candidate of Hispanic origin, or someone who can speak Spanish, can automatically obtain these votes," he said. "It's important tactically to have candidates that understand the issues of the community."

Bush also addressed the benefits of being the scion of such a storied political family, admitting that the name alone isn't enough - but that it helps. "It's always been a thing of my grandmother to say, 'Go out and make a name for yourself' and that's something that I've followed," he said. "But who better to ask for advice on politics than two former presidents and a former governor? They're not involved in the day-to-day operations. They're not involved in formulating my ideology. It's more of an informal advice."

Sat, 12 Jan 2013 18:58:45 -0800 St. Andrew's In Tangier: A Church With Muslim Art http://yvinedep.posterous.com/st-andrews-in-tangier-a-church-with-muslim-ar http://yvinedep.posterous.com/st-andrews-in-tangier-a-church-with-muslim-ar Tangier
Being in Morocco, Tangier is a mostly Muslim city. Being a port, it's also a mixed city with a long history of Christian and Jewish influence. That interesting blend comes out in the language, music, art and cooking. You can see Tangier's mix of cultures everywhere.

Even in the churches.

The Church of St. Andrew is an Anglican congregation close to the Place du Grand Socco. The first thing you'll notice is the church tower shaped like the square, Moorish-style minarets so common in the mosques here. The only difference is the English flag flying from the top and the lack of a loudspeaker to broadcast the Muslim call to prayer.

Entering the churchyard, you'll find a shady oasis of trees, shrubs and a well-manicured garden. Cats lounge amid the headstones, which include several for the fallen from various Allied armies during World War II. This part of the property looks like a regular English churchyard except for the palm trees and lack of moss on the headstones. Go inside, however, and you'll see something quite different.

The interior has several Islamic touches. The doors have rounded arches and elaborate carvings. The carved and painted wood ceiling looks like something from a Moorish palace. The arch just before the altar is the most elaborate and looks like it came from a Muslim palace. Arabic calligraphy spells out the words "bismi-ll?hi r-ra?m?ni r-ra??m" (In the name of God, the most Gracious, the most Merciful), which is the first line of each Surah (chapter) of the Koran.

So how did a verse from the Koran end up decorating an Anglican church in a Muslim country? The story starts in 1880, when the Sultan, Hassan I, gave land to the British expat community in Tangier so they could build a church. One was built but soon proved too small for the growing Christian community and so the present church was built in 1894. It was consecrated in 1905.

The design includes Islamic styles as a way of recognizing the friendly relations between the UK and Morocco and to honor the memory of the Sultan's donation. The work was done by Moroccan craftsmen.

St. Andrew's is by no means unique. During the height of Islamic civilization during the Middle Ages, European art and architecture borrowed frequently from Muslim styles. European artists copied Islamic styles and even included Arabic calligraphy in Christian works of art. Check out the gallery for a couple of surprising examples.

Fusion genes are common chromosomal aberrations in many cancers, and can be used as prognostic markers and drug targets in clinical practice. In this issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, researchers led by Matti Annala at Tampere University of Technology in Finland identified a fusion between the FGFR3 and TACC3 genes in human glioblastoma samples. The protein produced by this fusion gene promoted tumor growth and progression in a mouse model of glioblastoma, while increased expression of either of the normal genes did not alter tumor progression. Ivan Babic and Paul Mischel of the University of California, San Diego, explain in the accompanying commentary that it remains unclear how this fusion protein mediates tumorigenesis.
