Limbaugh, Pundits' Attacks on Candidates Are Nothing New

The past week has brought us a firestorm of debate surrounding whether there is an obligation to keep political discussion civil.

Rush Limbaugh saw flurry of sponsors pull out of his program as a result of disparaging remarks that he made. His statements were so controversial that even Don Imus, famous for his own disparaging comment scandal, condemned Limbaugh. The statements made by Rush, though considered by some to be disturbing, are not out of the norm for pundits this election cycle.

Here is a look back at some of the other scandalous statements made during this presidential election that have not received as much attention.

*Ann Coulter, while speaking at CPAC just weeks ago she compared Obama to Flavor Flav. The comment was phrased as a joke; the media took little notice of the comment.

*A U.S. District court judge ruled that a Twitter user had to reveal his identity to federal investigators after making sexually crude and violent comments about then-candidate Michele Bachmann. She brought up the incident when asked about her feelings on the Limbaugh scandal, adding that she thought that there was some overkill in the Limbaugh issue, but that "It doesn't matter whether a woman is a Republican or Democrat or whether she's liberal or conservative. This sort of violent talk should not be acceptable for anyone."

*Alan Colmes, of "Hannity and Colmes" fame, caused a small controversy when he questioned how Rick Santorum and his wife handled the death of their child by saying "once they get a load of some of the crazy things he's said and done, like taking his two-hour-old baby who died after childbirth and played with it for a couple hours so his other children would know that the child was real?" After being called out for the attack, Colmes issued an apology to Santorum via Twitter.

* Limbaugh actually defended the Lord's Resistance Army back in October, while accusing President Barack Obama of attempting to wage war on Christians. Limbaugh said, "Lord's Resistance Army are Christians. They are fighting the Muslims in Sudan. And Obama has sent troops, United States troops to remove them from the battlefield, which means kill them." He went on to add, "I mean the Coptic Christians are being wiped out, but it wasn't just Obama that supported that."
