Bayer, Onyx cancer drug shows modest improvement in survival

A colorectal cancer drug under development by Bayer HealthCare modestly improved overall survival in some of the sickest patients in a late-stage trial, partner Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc.?

The median overall survival of patients on experimental regorafenib was 6.4 months. That compares to five months for patients who were given a placebo.

Onyx called the finding, released at the American Society of Clinical Oncology's gastrointestinal cancer meeting in San Francisco, statistically significant. But critics appeared less than wowed by the small improvement.

The companies also said the 760-patient study showed that patients on regorafenib had a better median progression-free survival rate than those on placebo -- 1.9 months versus 1.7 months -- and a better disease control rate.

Comcast's connected cable box making a run at the FCC?

Comcast
Well, it's no secret that Comcast is starting to experiment with web-connected cable boxes, and now it looks like one of those set tops is moseying on through the FCC. The Pace-made "Parker" appears to have passed muster with regulators and you'll find both label examples and a user manual at the source link as evidence. There isn't much to learn about the tuner or, at least not much surprising. The usual bevy of coax, HDMI, composite and component ports are around back, as well as a CableCARD slot. What is of interest is the eSATA port and SD Card slot -- the later of which appears to be meant for servicing the box. Sadly, when it comes to connectivity, there is no WiFi on board, only Ethernet. Which means you'll run more wires to connect to your local network. Hit up the source if you're a fan of bureaucratic filings.

Communications and Collaboration Platforms | Career Management ...

What?s your morning communications, social media routine like? Mine?s getting more complicated every day. Personally, just email requires checking at least three accounts on three devices. At least one is Gmail, so I green-light Gmail chat and also Google+. Then it?s on to open a Skype window ? many clients, friends reach me through Skype instant message. And to make sure I?m truly open, AOL Instant Messenger and Yahoo Messenger are active, too. They?re a bit old-school, but a few of my clients still use them, so it?s not really negotiable in my world.? Then it?s on to Yammer to check up on the latest and greatest with my teams.

Twitter comes next. Hootsuite, Old School ?regular? Twitter, and TweetChat? helps me monitor multiple Twitter streams and also makes it simple to cross-populate Facebook and LinkedIn with content. Another communications tool I?ve been checking out is the open-source Trillian, which automates the? management of multiple chat clients on both desktop and phone.

When it comes to corporate communications, it?s a whole new ball of wax, Facebook page admins, several WordPress log-ins, all the email and communications platforms like MailChimp, Constant Contact, AWeber and more. There are even ways to communicate via song (Spotify) and visual interest (Pinterest). Granted, not all of these apply to professionalism, but in our connected world, they sure do influence it.

The new tools can also be overwhelming; it?s a matter of choosing and experimenting. But when do we finally just pick and stop experimenting? What works best for workplace collaboration and productivity??Do you stop communicating? Ever?

Actually, no. Facebook is saved for stolen moments between calls and meetings on my end. I?m trying to use it more frequently, and in a way that does not make my friends have to deal with all my tweets (always a work in progress). Let?s not forget Facebook messaging ? again, I?m trying to make it work into my weekly routine. And?LinkedIn ? the ole social standby ? is a great business communications tool, so there?s always a browser tab open for it.?Mind you, this is all before my first cup of coffee.

Does your social blend in a?way that feels comfortable and consistent yet??Do you sense a theme emerging here? I think many people are trying to determine the very best way to manage communications tools both for? business and for pleasure.

The irony: in this flurry of activity, there hasn?t been? a single F2F social interaction, not even a cat sitting on the keyboard. Over the past year, actual live phone conversations have dropped off a tad. I?ve been making a point to schedule more meetings in person and to call people via Skype, Google Voice,?or cell. Sometimes there is simply no time for in-person meetings. I live my business and social life, increasingly, in the world of social media. Some days it doesn?t seem healthy. Some days it feels just right. Some days I wonder how I ever existed without it. Some days I long for more IRL ?In Real Life? contact with people.

In this week?s TalentCulture World of Work #TChat ? brought to you through the wonders of social media, of course ? we?re looking at the good, the bad and the ugly of social communication and workplace collaboration tools. The beauty of ?Twitter Chats are clear ? hundreds of people worldwide can have a discussion in real time, regardless of physical location ? but it?s not clear which other social and workplace communications tools deliver a similar value.

And we have a hashtag where people can show up and share content, insight and fun with us 24.7. It?s become a unique online community and we look forward to continuing the conversation this year. We are going with the connection flow and enjoying every moment.

So let?s come together to explore which communications tools add value and which merely distract us from being productive.?Because you can?t use them all. Or can you??Join us Wednesday night on?#TChat? The World of Work January 18th from 7-8 pm ET (6-7 CT, 4-5 pm PT), where social media and communication topics are in the hot seat.?Join me,?Kevin Grossman,?Maren Hogan, Sean Charles?and?Kyle Lagunas?for a very special #TChat.

Here are the questions we?ll be discussing this week are here or below;

Surprise! People like free stuff, Amazon's lending library a success

Amazon Prime
You can always count on people's desire to avoid paying for stuff. That's why it shouldn't come as any surprise that Amazon's Lending Library is such a success. The free perk available to Prime customers who also happen to be Kindle owners launched in November with just 5,000 books available. Since then the library has expanded to over 75,000 titles with over 295,000 people borrowing an independently published KDP e-tome in December alone. To celebrate Amazon is adding another $200,000 to the pool available to Direct Publishing authors, pushing the grand total to $700,000. To read the entire self-congratulatory PR continue on after the break.

Gilani vs. the Military: Is a Coup d'etat in the Works in Pakistan? (Time.com)

In Pakistan, civilian governments never exit gracefully. They have all been given a mighty heave amid crisis. Sometimes prime ministers have been trampled by direct military coups. More often, they were shunted aside by subtler means. Charges of corruption often figure prominently, too, giving an otherwise ugly transfer of power a gloss of legitimacy. It becomes difficult to champion democracy when its chief beneficiaries are accused of carving private fortunes out of a poor country's coffers.

That is the kind of fate that many in Pakistan are increasingly foreseeing for Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani. For the past several weeks, his weak and unpopular coalition government has been increasingly harried on multiple fronts by a strident opposition, a hostile judiciary and a powerful military. But in a slight departure from the usual script, Gilani has decided to dig in his heels and fight back. In a dark warning to the country's politicians, Gilani warned last week that their choice is between "democracy and dictatorship." (PHOTOS: Pakistan Beneath the Surface)

The tension has not been helped by President Asif Ali Zardari's two recent visits to Dubai, which have sparked rumors of an impending coup. But there is little prospect of Pakistan's generals seizing direct control. As army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani knows, power can still be exercised from behind a thin veil. At the moment, the army already controls national security, foreign policy and even elements of the economy. It will resist any temptation to resort to the crude methods recently displayed by their Egyptian counterparts.

The more likely outcome is a Supreme Court ruling. The top judges have been looking into an American businessman's claims that the civilian government sent an unsigned memo calling on the U.S. military to intervene to avert a coup in Pakistan in the days after the killing of Osama bin Laden. The news of the memo had angered Pakistan's generals. In an unprecedented move, Gen. Kayani and his intelligence chief, Lieut. Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency, both submitted affidavits to the Supreme Court saying that they believe Pakistan's ambassador to the U.S, Husain Haqqani, was responsible for the memo. Gilani shot back that the two generals acted "illegally" and "unconstitutionally" by submitting their affidavits. He had already spoken publicly of the hazards of a "state within a state," a clear hint at the army's invisible power, and even asked aloud how bin Laden ended up living in Pakistan.

Then came a swift trade of blows. Haqqani has already been forced to resign and faces an investigation but denies orchestrating the memo. He could face charges of "treason" or "gross misconduct." Meanwhile, the army publicly chastised Gilani for his remarks and warned of "potentially grievous consequences for the country." Gilani responded by sacking the Defense Ministry's top bureaucrat, a retired three star general, replacing him with a trusted aide. The army was not amused, discreetly briefing the press that it would refuse to work with the new defense secretary. The army also announced that there was a new commander of the 111th brigade in Rawalpindi -- which would purportedly lead the speculated coup -- and leaked rumors that it had already staged a rehearsal. (READ: Gilani Warns of 'Trust Deficit' with U.S.)

As Gilani tussles with the generals, the Supreme Court has reheated old corruption charges. The judges have ruled that Gilani and his government have acted "dishonestly" by not asking the Swiss government to reopen graft cases against President Zardari. For the past two years, the government has stubbornly refused to cooperate with what it sees as a blatantly partisan court. Now, Gilani could be forced to quit, says a senior politician. "The Supreme Court might knock the prime minister out," the politician said, declining to be named.

Gilani's government also finds itself increasingly isolated. Given the dire state of relations between the two countries, Washington is reduced to the role of spectator, only able to voice lukewarm support for "constitutional process." Over the past year, efforts to shore up the civilian government have foundered as the relationship has once again reverted to one determined by mutual security needs.

The political opposition, led by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, now scents opportunity. Once wary of Pakistan's generals, it has decided to lock arms with them and push the Supreme Court to investigate claims that Haqqani and others may have been involved in writing the "treasonous" memo. Fast losing ground to cricket legend turned politician Imran Khan, Sharif's party is intent on halting its popular slide by seizing the initiative. Timing is also crucial. If Sharif fails to oust Gilani's coalition government by March, the ruling Pakistan People's Party is poised to win the highest number of seats in the forthcoming Senate elections, making it difficult for any successor to legislate effectively.

Gilani's government is desperately hoping to reach March, triumph at the Senate elections, and announce a general election once the summer's searing heat fades. Before then, however, the formidable opponents arrayed against it will be determined that this government meets its end as suddenly and as ignominiously as possible.

ECB aims to restore calm after S&P cuts: Nowotny (Reuters)

VIENNA (Reuters) ? The European Central Bank will do all it can to calm the situation after Standard & Poor's downgraded several euro zone members' debt ratings in the past week, ECB Governing Council member Ewald Nowotny said on Sunday.

Calling in particular Italy's two-notch downgrade "very dramatic", he told an Austrian television panel discussion the S&P moves had created a sensitive environment in the euro zone debt crisis.

"For the European Central Bank's part, everything that is within our possibilities will be done to bring about a relaxation (of the situation). We have made additional liquidity available and I think it is very important that overall a certain calming down takes place," he said.

He reiterated that it was also crucial to implement agreed measures such as putting into force a safety net for struggling euro zone members.

Nowotny, also head of the Austrian central bank, said he did not think S&P's one-notch downgrade of his country would have much impact on its borrowing costs because two other ratings agencies had kept its AAA of late. A report by Goldman Sachs he saw on Sunday came to the same conclusion, he added.

"Where the step by Standard & Poor's is in my view really dangerous is on the European level," he said.

"We had a certain relaxation process of late and with this step - a sweeping blow that affects almost all European states - this has been made significantly more difficult."

Nowotny said he had spoken with S&P about the downgrades and believed they reflected the agency's misgivings about how Europe was addressing the debt crisis.

"They have doubts in general about the system we are conducting in Europe, namely that we will advance via (fiscal) consolidation measures with a very restrictive policy of the European Central Bank," he said.

This contrasted with the aggressive intervention by the U.S. central bank, and may explain why Britain still has a top debt rating despite higher debt, Nowotny said. "This is a basic political discussion that has to be conducted," he said.

S&P cut its rating for Austria one notch to AA-plus with a negative outlook as part of the sweeping downgrades.

Nowotny said it was important to avoid slipping into a protracted debt cycle across Europe.

"The danger is that the longer the consolidation is drawn out, the more debt ratios rise, which makes the next consolidation more difficult. What we certainly don't want is a situation that even remotely resembles what we are now seeing in Italy, in Portugal - not to mention Greece - where a country is governed from abroad."

So Much Hot Air

Sure, the agreement wouldn?t come into effect until 2020?which sounds oddly complacent when environmentalists and political leaders warned ahead of the Copenhagen conference that we had just six months or even just 50 days to solve the climate problem. But, as the Guardian assured readers, this was a breakthrough, because developing countries, including India and China, were, for the first time, ?agreeing to be legally bound to curb their greenhouse gases.? And, just as importantly, the United States was making the same promise.

JPMorgan profit falls, but sees hope in economy (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? JPMorgan Chase & Co's fourth-quarter profit fell 23 percent, in line with Wall Street expectations, as the European debt crisis depressed trading and corporate deal-making, dragging down shares of the major U.S. banks.

But Chief Executive Jamie Dimon said the largest U.S. bank by assets was seeing signs of improvement in U.S. loan demand and credit quality as the economy recovers.

"I believe you are seeing real loan growth," Dimon said in a conference call with reporters.

JPMorgan is the first major U.S. bank to announce results for the fourth quarter. Its figures show Wall Street firms such as Goldman Sachs Group Inc and Morgan Stanley are in for a tough quarter as investment banking suffers.

Others such as Bank of America Corp and Citigroup Inc, which also report results in the coming days, could benefit from the stronger business loan demand that JPMorgan experienced but could also face problems in investment banking and housing loans.

JPMorgan's results "show that there are major headwinds against the banking industry and it requires a strong management team to battle the headwinds," said Rick Meckler, president of investment firm Libertyview Capital Management in New York.

"The bigger negatives tend to be the housing and mortgage situation and investors questioning, 'Have we really hit bottom in this sector or is this just a black hole?'"

JPMorgan shares fell 2.9 percent in premarket trading. Goldman Sachs was down 2.2 percent, Morgan Stanley was down 1.8 percent, and Bank of America was down 2 percent.

Dimon expressed renewed concern about the European debt crisis, saying he was "very, very cautious."

"I would put myself in the 'increasing worried' category," he said.

ROUGH TIMES

JPMorgan said fourth-quarter net income was $3.72 billion, or 90 cents a share, down from $4.83 billion, or $1.12 a share, a year earlier.

Wall Street analysts, on average, had expected 90 cents a share, according to surveys by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue declined 17 percent to $22.2 billion on an adjusted basis. Investment banking revenue fell 30 percent to $4.36 billion, hurt by a 39 percent drop in underwriting and advisory fees, a 13 percent decline in fixed income, and a 31 percent fall in equity markets.

The results were complicated by an accounting adjustment that reduced earnings by 9 cents per share to reflect a change in the market value of JPMorgan debt during the quarter. In the third quarter, the accounting adjustment added 29 cents per share to profits.

The bank also booked additional expenses for litigation, primarily for mortgage matters, totaling 8 cents a share. It said reducing its loan loss reserves added 11 cents per share to the earnings.

"The earnings show how well JPMorgan can be managed in one of the roughest times," said money manager Michael Holland, founder of Holland & Co. "They were able to pull off a meet-or-beat quarter."

"We all knew the fourth quarter would be difficult," said Gary Townsend of Hill-Townsend Capital. "But the overall economic outlook has been improving from an economic standpoint starting in December."

The bank's return on equity, a key measure of shareholder profits, fell to 8 percent from 11 percent a year earlier and 9 percent in the 2011 third quarter.

The company's quarter-end share count declined 4 percent from a year earlier as it bought back stock.
