Common errors in New Jersey estate planning | Jersey City Estate ...

Many people don't consider doing estate planning a priority. In recent years, people have tried using the do it yourself estate planning documents in order to save money. When these documents are hastily thrown together, the effects can end up not being what was originally intended. If an estate isn't properly planned, the beneficiaries of that estate might find themselves scrambling to figure out who gets what.

People should always carefully review their estate documents for errors. They should also be sure to regularly update their documents if their situation changes. Many times people get divorce, have another child, or there is a death in the family that will require them to update their plan.

Speaking with an estate planning attorney might be a wise decision. Considering the following things for estate might help you avoid some costly mistakes:

?? Remembering that estate planning is not one-size-fits-all. All people have unique needs and unique wishes, and speaking with an experienced attorney can be beneficial in making sure you have a customized estate plan.

?? Not having a plan should not be an option. Everyone should consider what will happen to their belongings after they pass away. While thinking about death isn't always pleasant, it can bring peace of mind knowing that your relatives will know what to do.

?? Coordinating with other professionals to make the financial aspect of estate planning go smoothly is important. Some estate planning moves might have different tax consequences.

Since everyone's situation is different, it is important to speak with an attorney who can address your need and what you want to happen to your belongings.

Diabetes Can Take a Toll on Your Emotions

THURSDAY, May 17 (HealthDay News) -- Many people know diabetes -- both type 1 and type 2 -- can take a serious toll on physical health. But these blood-sugar disorders also can affect your emotions and, in turn, your emotions can wreak havoc on your diabetes control.

Extremes in blood-sugar levels can cause significant mood changes, and new research suggests that frequent changes in blood-sugar levels (called glycemic variability) also can affect mood and quality of life for those with diabetes.

Depression has long been linked to diabetes, especially type 2. It's still not clear, however, whether depression somehow triggers diabetes or if having diabetes leads to being depressed.

More recent research in people with type 1 diabetes has found that long periods of high blood-sugar levels can trigger the production of a hormone linked to the development of depression.

People with type 1 diabetes no longer can make their own insulin; people with type 2 diabetes need insulin treatment because their bodies can no longer produce it in sufficient quantities.

"Diabetes gives you so much to worry about that it's exhausting. It can make you feel powerless," said Joe Solowiejczyk, a certified diabetes educator and a manager of diabetes counseling and training at the Johnson & Johnson Diabetes Institute in Milpitas, Calif. "I think it's important to acknowledge that, from time to time, you're going to have a meltdown. You're going to have days when you feel exasperated, frustrated, sad, in denial and physically exhausted."

Solowiejczyk, who has type 1 diabetes himself, said these feelings become a problem "when you're not able to get on with your life, and you're persistently not taking care of your diabetes."

Not only does diabetes increase the risk of serious health complications, but uncontrolled diabetes also may worsen depression, causing a vicious cycle.

In addition to an increased risk of depression, diabetes can affect mood even from minute to minute. For example, someone who experiences low blood sugar may suddenly become irritable, even combative, and may act as if they are drunk, slurring their words.

Low blood-sugar levels (also known as hypoglycemia) occur when someone has taken too much insulin or hasn't eaten enough food. Exercise, alcohol and many other factors can lower blood-sugar levels unpredictably.

The problem, Solowiejczyk said, is "that the brain operates totally on glucose. When you don't have enough glucose, things start breaking down and your cognitive function doesn't work that well. This is a physiological, not an emotional, response."

Dr. Vivian Fonseca, president of medicine and science for the American Diabetes Association, said, "Hypoglycemia reactions are very understandable. There are also some fluctuations that are not quite in the hypoglycemia range that may affect anxiety levels."

High blood-sugar levels (hyperglycemia) also can lead to mood changes. "Hyperglycemia can affect your ability to concentrate and can make you feel grouchy," Solowiejczyk said. "Any change in the blood sugar outside of the normal ranges makes you feel weird and uncomfortable."

A small study in the April issue of the journal Diabetes Technology & Therapeutics found that frequent fluctuations in blood-sugar levels in women with type 2 diabetes were associated with a lower quality of life and negative moods.

Fonseca said, however, it's important for these findings to be replicated in a larger population.

Although diabetes and blood-sugar levels can affect emotions, emotions also can affect patients' blood-sugar levels and diabetes control.

In another study in the same journal issue, researchers tested blood-sugar levels in non-diabetic bungee jumpers, and found that the stress of the jump caused their blood-sugar levels to rise significantly. Not surprisingly, their stress hormones also were higher due to the body's normal fight-or-flight response. When this happens, the liver releases glucose to make energy available to the body's cells, according to the American Diabetes Association.

People with diabetes don't have sufficient insulin to let that glucose into the body's cells, however, so instead of providing energy, the sugar just builds up in the blood.

Another emotional minefield often associated with type 2 diabetes is the concept of blame. Most people with type 2 diabetes are overweight, and many are sedentary. Being overweight alone, however, doesn't cause type 2 diabetes. There are other factors, such as a genetic predisposition, at play. But because exercise and losing weight can help prevent -- or, in some cases, reverse -- type 2 diabetes, society often blames people with the disease. (Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that is not caused by diet or lack of exercise.)

"I think there is a prejudice against overweight people and people with type 2 diabetes, and that's something they have to deal with," Solowiejczyk noted.

What's important, he said, is that if you're persistently having trouble dealing with any of the emotions that come with diabetes, you talk with your doctor, diabetes educator or therapist.

"You should be feeling bad or resentful or angry sometimes," he said. "Diabetes is hard, and all of those feelings come along with the disease. But if you're [irritable] and angry or if you're sad all the time, you're not going to take care of yourself."

The same advice is true for partners of people with diabetes and parents of children with diabetes, he said.

Metropolis - Arts & Entertainment | Peverelist

Long before Skrillex brought dubstep to the McDonald?s-quaffing American masses, the genre was born out of the underground melding of UK drum ?n? bass, garage and dub sound systems. Bristol record shop and label owner, producer and DJ Peverelist (Tom Ford) was part of it and returns to Tokyo next week to show punters how it?s really done.

Dubstep has blown up in North America. What are the pluses and minuses?

I don?t actually have any connection with that scene. I?ve never played in North America. I got asked to play there a couple of years ago but it was a corporate gig so I turned it down. There is a lot of talk in the mainstream media about dubstep now but when I listen to the music, I don?t recognize it as anything that I am involved in. What I do is completely different. I don?t really use that word anymore because it is misleading.

Tell us about a formative musical experience.

Hearing roots music on a sound system at St Paul?s Carnival in Bristol. Understanding the space and the bass and the treble.

What were the first events you spun at like?

I started out playing at house parties and little clubs and then moved on to second rooms at bigger clubs. When I started to take it more seriously I was playing as resident at club nights Context and Dubloaded and Subloaded in Bristol in 2004 and 2005. Always small events with mostly heads there to check out new music rather than parties if you know what I mean? Good sound systems and playing a lot of new music.

Tell us about the creation of Punch Drunk Records.

I started the label [Punch Drunk] in 2006. The roots of a dubstep scene in Bristol were planted by Pinch?s Context dances and they stimulated the imagination of a group of producers who were interested in doing something different and pursuing their own musical destiny, which was what we all saw dubstep as?not a sound, but an opportunity to do your own thing and be accepted for it. I started the label as a platform for those producers to promote their music to the wider world. It?s always been a grassroots thing. A Bristol thing. I have a new label now called Livity Sound, which is more focused on productions of myself, Kowton and Asusu.

What are the highs and lows of the current Bristol scene?

Highs: Idle Hands Records, lots of new vinyl only labels, Teachings in Dub (music in a club), Boundary Object (Music in a pub), Young Echo Radio, Livity Sound. Lows: The success of big events with bad music.

Tell us about a fresh production.

I am working on a remix of a producer called Alex Coulton who recently had a release on Idle Hands. It?s trippy, tribal, dark bass music I think?!?

What can punters expect at Eleven?

Listening to some quality underground UK music, new and old, doing a little dance and getting drunk.

Vinyl, CDs or laptop. Which and why?

Why would you play music off a laptop?! Madness. I play records because I always have and they sound good and I have thousands of them.

How will Peverelist be chilling in Tokyo?

I am coming to eat all the food and hang out with my Tokyo crew. I might get a chance to check some record shops, especially my friends Disc Shop Zero. Maybe I?ll stare at some synths too.

Eleven, May 25 (listing).

Exploitation, loneliness in sex tourism film at Cannes

CANNES, France (Reuters) - Just who exploits and who is exploited in the sex tourism industry is the question asked in director Ulrich Seidl's "Paradise Love", a powerful and unsettling exploration of female loneliness and economic imbalance in Africa.

Called "Paradies: Liebe", the German-language movie is in competition at the Cannes film festival and had its world premiere on Friday.

The Austrian director chose as his subject white European women in their 50s who go on holiday in Kenya where they meet so-called "Beach Boys," young men who become their lovers.

The women, past their physical prime and disappointed by past relationships at home, seek sexual fulfillment and a sense of feeling loved.

The men, who have few job prospects other than selling trinkets on the beach, expect money or gifts in exchange, if not the promise of a better life in Europe.

The women dream of finding someone who accepts them as they are and their lovers dream of getting ahead. The clash of intentions allows the film to paint a bleak picture of people's ability to communicate.

"Hakuna matata," or "no problem," might be the phrase the beach boys like to repeat, but the master-slave relationships create a tense atmosphere in the beach front paradise.

A form of colonialism is alive and well here, as the young black men struggle to please and to be paid.

One arresting image is of a group of young men hovering around a line of beach chairs on which the women sun themselves. The men watch attentively just meters away, hoping to be noticed, but they are segregated by a rope barrier.

Paradise Love is the first film in a trilogy that took Seidl four years to shoot. The three features tell separate stories about three women from the same family.

Seidl shot the film without a script, relying on the ability of actors to improvise around scenes sketched out in advance.

He spent a year and a half in the editing room before realizing that the three different plot lines would not hold together, leading to his choice of a trilogy.

TORTURED RELATIONSHIPS

Lead actress Margarethe Tiesel, a strong early contender for the best actress prize for a tour de force performance as Teresa, sees female loneliness at the heart of the tortured and artificial relationships between unfulfilled white women and young African men, many of whom are already married.

"The people who are at home, exploited, travel abroad and become exploiters in turn," Tiesel told a news conference. "I don't judge these women, I understand them fully and what leads them to this situation, the loneliness they struggle with."

That loneliness is exacerbated by disappointment, as the audience sees each young man that Teresa meets eventually pressure her for money, dispelling her hopes that they could love her.

In one sequence, Teresa tries to teach her awkward new lover, Munga, how to caress her breasts with tenderness.

"No, I'm not an animal. A cat, you know you pet them like this. Do it like this. With feeling. Do you understand? With feeling," she instructs him.

Seidl cast real-life beach boys in the film, a decision which adds to a sense of unsparing reality that is often hard to watch on the screen.

"He had experience with European women. He was authentic," Seidl said of the actor who plays Munga, Peter Kuzungu.

'Bad' Fat May Hurt Brain Function Over Time

FRIDAY, May 18 (HealthDay News) -- Women who eat a lot of "bad" saturated fat may hurt their overall brain function and memory over time, Harvard University researchers report.

In contrast, eating more "good" monounsaturated fat improved brain function and memory, suggesting that fats may have the same effect on the brain as they do on the heart, the researchers added.

"Making changes and substitutions in one's diet to eat fewer saturated fats and consume more monounsaturated fats might be a way to help prevent cognitive decline in older people," said lead researcher Dr. Olivia Okereke, an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. "This is important because cognitive decline affects millions of older people. So, this is a promising area of research."

Just like exercising, maintaining a healthy weight and not smoking, this may be another modifiable factor in the fight against mental decline, Okereke added.

"Such modifiable factors are important because these are things that people can actually change and over which they can exert some individual control," she said.

The report was published in the May 18 online edition of the Annals of Neurology.

For the study, Okereke's team collected data on 6,000 women who took part in the U.S. Women's Health Study.

These women took three brain function tests every two years over an average span of four years.

In addition, they filled out detailed food questionnaires at the start of the study and before the brain tests.

The researchers found that over time, women who ate the highest amounts of saturated fat had the worst overall brain function and memory, compared to the women who ate the least.

Moreover, women who ate the most monounsaturated fats had higher scores on brain tests over the four years of testing, they note.

Saturated fat comes from animal fats such as red meat and butter, while monounsaturated fats are found in olive oil and other vegetable products.

In the study, the researchers accounted for many things that could influence the findings, including age, education, exercise, smoking, drinking, medication use and health conditions. This is done to ensure that the findings are not due to better health behaviors among certain women.

"We think it is unlikely that these findings regarding dietary fat would be primarily explained by a healthy lifestyle in those with more education," Okereke said.

Although this study was among women, "it would make sense that the basic underlying reasons for the findings we saw in women should also apply to men," she added.

Samantha Heller, a dietitian, nutritionist, exercise physiologist and clinical nutrition coordinator at the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital in Derby, Conn., commented that "it appears that the effects of eating a lot of saturated fat and the foods associated with it, such as red and processed meats, cheese and butter, over time creates a cascade effect of ill health."

This study supports others that have found an association between saturated fats, the incidence of Alzheimer's disease and an increased decline in brain function, she said.

"Saturated fat has been associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis, cancer and diabetes, and may increase fat storage in your abdomen -- commonly referred to as 'ab flab,'" Heller said.

"Ab flab in and of itself increases the risk for heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers and Alzheimer's disease," she said.

The evidence is stacking up against consuming saturated fat regularly, Heller said.

"To lower your intake of saturated fat, choose low or nonfat dairy foods such as fat-free milk and yogurt. Stick with skinless poultry and fish. Limit red and processed meats such as beef, pork, lamb, hot dogs or bologna, to a few times a month. Experiment with meatless meals such as veggie burgers, spinach-eggplant lasagna, or black bean, corn and avocado tacos," she advised.

Russell Brand on Katy Perry: Nothing But Love!

Russell Brand and Katy Perry might as well be teaching Celebrity Breakups 101.

Proving that a split doesn't have to be bitter or contentious just because it's painful, the comedian opened up to Ellen DeGeneres about his recent divorce and had only positive things to say about former wife Katy Perry.

"I still love her as a human being," he said. "But, sometimes when you're in a relationship I suppose it doesn't work out, does it? You can't absolutely make everything the way you want it to be in life. But that doesn't mean I regret it or anything."

"Sometimes things are just different and then you move with that and try and remain in contact with what is beautiful about yourself and each other."

"I was very happy to be married with her," Brand continued. "She's such a beautiful human being and I just have only love and positivity for her."

Perry has since rebounded with Florence + The Machine guitarist Robert Ackroyd, with whom she was spotted packing on the PDA at Coachella.

Still, it's time to move on. Last week, Brand finally unfollowed her on Twitter.

Also on Ellen, Brand weighed in on various newsworthy items of the day, including the Time Magazine breastfeeding cover. You gotta watch.

Future Lincoln: The Luxury Car Stylings of 2025

Editor's note: After this story appeared in the May 2012 issue of Popular Mechanics, Lincoln revealed the 2013 MKZ. Take a look at it here.

When Ford killed Mercury but kept Lincoln alive in 2010, it was clear the automaker still had hopes for the struggling luxury brand. That same year, Max Wolff became Lincoln's first-ever design director, tasked with revitalizing the brand's image. Previously, Wolff had been a pivotal member of the Cadillac team during its own design overhaul. Fresh styling cues, such as Lincoln's waterfall grille, have trickled into the lineup over the past few years, but the MKZ concept, which debuted at the 2012 Detroit auto show, was supposed to show off a bold new design direction. Reviews, however, were mixed.

Now Wolff and his team are not limiting themselves to their own ideas. They recently teamed up with the transportation design department at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit to mine the minds of the industry's next generation of designers. To provide real-world experience for the students, CCS classes often collaborate with carmakers on design projects, but the relationship is mutually beneficial: Automakers scope out top talent and reap a little inspiration in the process.

For fall 2011, Ford and Lincoln challenged CCS students in the senior studio class to design a 2025 Lincoln with seating for four or more. Each student had to select a target market for the vehicle, and the design had to be viable (sorry, no fusion-powered carbon-fiber coupes this time). They then spent two weeks researching, six weeks sketching and rendering, and six weeks creating one-quarter-scale clay models. Each week members of the Lincoln design team would drop in to provide guidance. At the end of the semester the school selected four of the top models for exhibition at the 2012 Detroit auto show. These are the four models that made the cut, with an explanation straight from the students' mouths.
