Light-based computers? First all-optical nanowire switch

ScienceDaily (Sep. 10, 2012) ? Computers may be getting faster every year, but those advances in computer speed could be dwarfed if their 1's and 0's were represented by bursts of light, instead of electricity.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have made an important advance in this frontier of photonics, fashioning the first all-optical photonic switch out of cadmium sulfide nanowires. Moreover, they combined these photonic switches into a logic gate, a fundamental component of computer chips that process information.

The research was conducted by associate professor Ritesh Agarwal and graduate student Brian Piccione of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in Penn's School of Engineering and Applied Science. Post-doctoral fellows Chang-Hee Cho and Lambert van Vugt, also of the Materials Science Department, contributed to the study.

It was published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.

The research team's innovation built upon their earlier research, which showed that their cadmium sulfide nanowires exhibited extremely strong light-matter coupling, making them especially efficient at manipulating light. This quality is crucial for the development of nanoscale photonic circuits, as existing mechanisms for controlling the flow of light are bulkier and require more energy than their electronic analogs.

"The biggest challenge for photonic structures on the nanoscale is getting the light in, manipulating it once it's there and then getting it out," Agarwal said. "Our major innovation was how we solved the first problem, in that it allowed us to use the nanowires themselves for an on-chip light source."

The research team began by precisely cutting a gap into a nanowire. They then pumped enough energy into the first nanowire segment that it began to emit laser light from its end and through the gap. Because the researchers started with a single nanowire, the two segment ends were perfectly matched, allowing the second segment to efficiently absorb and transmit the light down its length.

"Once we have the light in the second segment, we shine another light through the structure and turn off what is being transported through that wire," Agarwal said. "That's what makes it a switch."

The researchers were able to measure the intensity of the light coming out of the end of the second nanowire and to show that the switch could effectively represent the binary states used in logic devices.

"Putting switches together lets you make logic gates, and assembling logic gates allows you to do computation," Piccione said. "We used these optical switches to construct a NAND gate, which is a fundamental building block of modern computer processing."

A NAND gate, which stands for "not and," returns a "0" output when all its inputs are "1." It was constructed by the researchers by combining two nanowire switches into a Y-shaped configuration. NAND gates are important for computation because they are "functionally complete," which means that, when put in the right sequence, they can do any kind of logical operation and thus form the basis for general-purpose computer processors.

"We see a future where 'consumer electronics' become 'consumer photonics'," Agarwal said. "And this study shows that is possible."

The research was supported by the U.S. Army Research Office and the National Institutes of Health's New Innovator Award Program.

Case Study: Results From First Year Of Weight ... - Flirting With Fitness

Case Study: Results From First Year Of Weight Training
? 2012 Doug Champigny, http://flirtingwithfitness.com
All Rights Reserved Worldwide.

A year ago our son Devon Peacock started to train with TC & me, and while he?s also become a certified personal trainer in the meantime he has allowed me the honour of weight training him and setting our nutritional plan each week. Dev was 23 when we started the year, and as always we tracked everything ? weights, reps, exercises, cycles, etc. ? and did monthly photo sessions.

Each workout cycle was 3 ? 4 weeks in length, and rotated through a mix of powerlifting, weightlifting and bodybuilding routines since our goals at this point were overall health & fitness (a blend of additional lean bodymass and strength gains). Devon?s naturally lean so there were no weight-loss cycles included in his training.

Case Study: Devon Peacock's First Year Weight Training Results

Case Study: Devon Peacock?s First Year Weight Training Results

As you can tell from Devon?s before picture (taken Sept. 2011), he had already worked out from time to time and was in good shape at 23. But due to his lean frame he had always considered himself a hardgainer unable to put on much muscle mass in spite of his weight training.

His goal as we started to train together was simple ? he wanted to get stronger, balance out his physique and put on some visible muscle mass without bloating up from excess bodyfat. To his credit, Devon gave his weight training and nutrition 110% in spite of his previous lack of real gains, missing only 1 or 2 workouts throughout the year.

As is always the case some workouts were better than others, with some being terminated early if either of us simply didn?t have it in us that day, while others went well enough to add in a few extra sets or include some added-intensity techniques for a set or two. As his personal trainer I?m pleased to see that Devon has built bigger muscles in every area of his body while balancing out his overall physique. As his father, I?m both proud and amazed at how much effort he?s put in to ensure his success with his first serious year of weight training ? good on ya, Dev!

Building Bigger Muscles And Gaining Lean Bodyweight
The current photos of Devon (Sept. 2012, above right) show the lean bodyweight gains he?s made in just one year. Some of his stats include gaining 14 lbs of lean bodyweight, adding two inches to his chest, an inch to each arm and over 2? to each thigh.

Equally important, his arms, thighs and calves are now perfectly balanced, each stretching the tape the same amount left to right. Devon?s musculature is proportionate top-to-bottom over his 6? 2? (188cm) frame, and his results this first year leads us both to believe that over time Devon will be able to pack a lot more lean muscle onto his frame since it appears he may not, in fact, be a hardgainer ? or at least less of one than he first thought.

Strength Gains: Getting Stronger Fast
While Devon?s muscle building has been impressive this year, remember that our goal was a mix of building muscles and gaining raw strength for overall fitness. And once again Devon has triumphed, racking up some amazing strength gains and getting stronger fast ? faster than either of us had predicted.

In just this first year of serious weight training Dev has achieved a 300 lb. (137 kilo) deadlift and repeated it 3 or 4 times now to totally ?own? it. This is an increase of 100 lbs. (45 kilos) in the past year ? especially impressive given his new deadlift is approaching twice his bodyweight. His bent rows are up 80 lbs, bench press is up 80 pounds, military (seated overhead) press is up 100 lbs and his curls are up 30 lbs ? again, all in the last year.

Fitness Goals Met & Exceeded ? Strength & Muscle
Overall, most trainees in their first year of weight lifting would be happy with either of Devon?s new muscle mass or new strength ? but together they combine for fantastic results. Are his gains typical for first-year weightlifting trainees? Of course not ? Devon?s body is as unique as yours or mine ? no two bodies will react the same way to any specific training regime, which is why certified personal trainers create specific programs for each athlete and then modify the programs according to the results produced on an on-going basis.

Another factor is Devon?s age ? at 23/24, the male body is peaking in its ability to produce hormones like testosterone and growth hormone, and his metabolism hasn?t started to slow down yet ? in fact, his mix of ultra-heavy rep and higher, lighter rep schemes should keep that efficiency for years to come. While both my own lean muscle mass and strength have continued to build nicely during this year, neither matches Devon?s results and he has caught me on most exercises ? even surpassed my weights on a few of them. But at 57 I don?t expect to be able to build as fast nor recover as quickly as he does at 24. What?s important is that we?re both making progress continually.

What is typical is that with the right training and nutrition, trainees in their first year of weight training should always be able to increase their strength and build muscles ? how much they gain in either will vary. If you?re in your first year of weight training, don?t have access to a certified personal trainer and are not overly happy with your results to date, do an honest self-audit of your workouts, nutrition and rest patterns.

Are you skipping workouts often? Do you change up your exercises, rep ranges and between-set rest periods regularly? Are you eating enough ? especially enough protein while keeping your carb intake reasonable for your system? Are you taking enough recovery time between workouts based on the type of training during that cycle, but not leaving it too long between workouts? And, of course, are you regularly getting 7 ? 10 hours of sleep a night to allow your body time to repair & build?

During this last year Devon has referred to me as a ?hardass trainer? and a ?nutrition nazi? ? hopefully in a loving sense, of course? LOL But the truth is all the kudos have to go to the trainee in their first year of weight training ? they?re the ones putting in the time, effort and extreme mental focus required to get these kinds of results. Not only has Devon raised his strength and overall health & fitness to a whole new level, he?s enjoying new-found respect from friends and co-workers and new attention from the fairer sex. He?s become a role model for other ?skinny guys? who think they?re hardgainers ? even if they are. His results are an inspiration to anyone trying to overcome questionable genetic builds to achieve the body they desire.

For now, Devon and I are starting a new 12-week program I?ve designed for people entering 90-day challenges ? as always, we?ll test it out fully before releasing any information about it. And if you?re interested in knowing more about the workouts that got Devon these fantastic results, I?ll be going more in depth about his training and nutrition in the first issue of our Flirting With Fitness online magazine, available as a free download from this site later this month ? be sure to bookmark the site and return often for updates? And don?t forget to add your comments below ? we love hearing from our online fitness family!

Chicago schools: 'Very close' to averting strike

Sitthixay Ditthavong / AP

Members of community group Parents 4 Teachers display pro-teacher posters outside City Hall on Friday in Chicago. The Chicago Teachers Union has threatened to proceed with plans to strike on Monday, if negotiations fail.

By NBC News staff and wire services

CHICAGO --?Chicago Public School officials said late on Saturday they believed they were "very close" to reaching an agreement with teachers to avert what would be the biggest U.S. labor strike in a year over Mayor Rahm Emanuel's demand for sweeping school reforms.

Some 29,000 teachers and support staff have threatened to strike on Monday, setting up an awkward confrontation between Emanuel, President Barack Obama's former top White House aide, and organized labor in the president's home city.

A protracted stoppage could sour relations between Obama's Democrats and national labor unions, who are among the biggest financial supporters of the Democratic Party and will be needed by the party to help get out the vote in the November 6 election.

Both sides in the dispute expressed some optimism at the end of negotiations on Saturday evening - with school officials sounding more hopeful than the union. The two sides will resume talks on Sunday morning.

"This is a proposal that we believe is very close to what is needed to do a deal," said school board president David Vitale.

"We have listened. We have moved dramatically on almost all of these issues to try to accommodate them and to respect our teachers."

Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis said the offer was improved, but she would not call it "dramatically" improved. Union officials departed from union headquarters singing "Solidarity Forever."

And the union earlier Saturday said it would set up strike headquarters in anticipation of an impasse, NBCChicago.com reported.

"There's enough distance between the two sides that without some real movement, we're not going to get this thing done on time," CTU vice president Jesse Sharkey told NBCChicago.com.

If teachers walk off the job Monday, it would be the first teachers strike in Chicago in 25 years, affecting up to 400,000 students.

School officials have encouraged parents to have contingency plans on Monday. Chicago Public Schools Chief Jean-Claude Brizard said 144 schools would remain open for half-day programs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the event of a strike, according to NBCChicago.com.

A protracted stoppage could sour relations between Obama's Democrats and national labor unions, who are among the biggest financial paymasters of the Democratic Party and will be needed by the party to help get out the vote in the November elections.

While Emanuel did not attend the talks, he and Lewis have clashed, and she has accused him of being a bully and using profanity in private meetings.

When talks ended on Friday, the union described the latest offer from the school district as "totally unacceptable."

Difficult times, new direction
At issue is teacher pay and school reforms, such as tougher teacher evaluations that are the core of a national debate on improving struggling urban schools.

Emanuel is offering a 2 percent pay increase annually over the next four years, while the union wants substantially more.

The 402,000 students of Chicago's public schools score poorly on standardized reading, math and science tests in most national studies, and the union says that class sizes are far too big.

Emanuel, who has a reputation as a tough negotiator, is demanding that teacher evaluations be tied with standardized test results, a move the union is resisting.

Only about 60 percent of high school students in Chicago graduate, compared with a national average of 75 percent and more than 90 percent in some affluent Chicago suburbs.

More than 80 percent the students in Chicago public schools qualify for free lunches because they are from low-income families.

Until Emanuel pushed through a longer school day this year, Chicago elementary school students received fewer hours of instruction per year than any of 30 major city school districts studied by reform group National Center on Time and Learning.

Chicago pushes longer school days as key to achievement

The city has little room to sweeten the pot in the negotiations because the school district has already drained its budget reserves and levied the highest property tax allowed by law to finance schools.

It also faces a crushing burden of pensions promised to retiring teachers that an independent watchdog said the city can no longer afford.

Major credit rating agencies have downgraded the Chicago Public Schools debt rating, meaning that it will have to pay higher interest rates if it issues bonds.

?Teachers want to be in the classroom but we need to stand up for our rights," Albert Delgado, a teacher at the Whittier School in the city's Pilsen neighborhood, told Reuters. "I can only say that the teachers I spoke with believe we will be on the picket line (on Monday)."

Buffalo Bill performer reburied at SD reservation - KansasCity.com

The remains of a man who died young while touring the world with Buffalo Bill were hidden for more than a century in an unmarked grave some 1,700 miles from his South Dakota Indian reservation.

Now Albert Afraid of Hawk is returning home. He'll be reburied Sunday in accordance with Lakota tradition, thanks largely to a curious and persistent Connecticut history buff.Bob Young uncovered records of the Oglala Sioux member's death at a Connecticut hospital after a bout with food poisoning from eating bad corn. A few years ago, Young pieced the details together and reached out to Afraid of Hawk's family members."It's something that should have happened a long time ago, but it didn't," said Marlis Afraid of Hawk, 54, whose father, Daniel Afraid of Hawk, is Albert's last living nephew. "... Nobody even questioned where he is buried or where this person is. It was left at that."Afraid of Hawk began traveling with Buffalo Bill's world-famous troupe known as the Congress of Rough Riders of the World two years before he died at age 20. He was among a rotating cast that helped educate and entertain thousands of spectators eager to hear firsthand accounts of life on the unruly terrain.Last month, Marlis Afraid of Hawk, Daniel Afraid of Hawk and other relatives traveled to Connecticut from their homes on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota to witness the disinterment of Albert's remains.Young, president of a museum in Danbury, Conn., had identified the location of Afraid of Hawk's grave at a cemetery there."At the start it was just another research project, but each piece I came up with got me more interested," said Young, who was working at the cemetery at the time of the discovery.Nicholas Bellantoni, the state archeologist for Connecticut, knew the coffin would have long disintegrated, and he prepared the family for the possibility that the acidic Connecticut soil had left little behind. Bellantoni and a team of excavators gently dug a couple of feet into the ground with a backhoe. At about 4 1/2 feet, they began getting hits on a metal detector, signaling they were getting closer to nails that had been in the coffin. Then, once a piece of soil dislodged, bone began to poke out. It was Albert's skull."I knew right there that Albert had been preserved, at least in part, and that they would be able to bring Albert home," Bellantoni said.It was a breakthrough for family members, who had been searching for decades. In the 1970s they even traveled to Washington, D.C., to learn more about Afraid of Hawk's death, returning with a picture but little information. The team in Connecticut also recovered hair fibers, copper beads from an earring, a copper ring and six handles from Albert's coffin. Bellantoni said he was surprised at how ornate the coffin handles were. Now those remains are in South Dakota, where a wake and funeral will be held to allow Afraid of Hawk to enter the spirit world. He was born in 1879, the third of seven children belonging to Emil Afraid of Hawk and his wife, White Mountain. His brother Richard was among the survivors of the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890. Afraid of Hawk joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West show in 1898 with a childhood friend from the Oglala Sioux Tribe, and he apparently sent money back to family members living on the Pine Ridge reservation while performing with the show.Buffalo Bill, whose name was William F. Cody, regularly employed about 50 Native Americans - mostly Lakota - during the 30-year run of the show in the late 1880s and early 1900s, said Lynn Houze, assistant curator at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyo.The shows were made up of 15 to 24 acts, including sharpshooters, races and performances depicting cowboys against Indians. The show helped catapult the American cowboy to icon status, and Cody believed he was helping to preserve the Native American culture, even if they were, at times, presented in a stereotypical manner. Cody encouraged Native American performers to retain their language, rituals and beliefs but often portrayed them as savages attacking white settlers."At that time with the reservation system, the government was forcing a lot of the kids to be sent to Carlisle or other Indian Schools. This way, a lot of them were able to continue to be Indian and preserve their culture," Houze said. "He became their friend and was an advocate of theirs."But life in the show was difficult. Performers arrived in a new city almost daily, setting up camp before putting on one show in the afternoon and another in the evening. After that, they'd pack up and head to the next town.Other performers- both Native Americans and non-Natives - who died during the show's run were often buried in the city where they died, Houze said. In the late 1990s, the remains of Chief Long Wolf, also Lakota, were returned after a British woman read about his death and tracked down family members in South Dakota. Long Wolf, 52, died in 1892 of pneumonia while performing in London. He was buried in the same casket as a 17-month-old Lakota girl, Star, who died after falling from a horse while performing in a show.Marlis Afraid of Hawk said she is relieved that for Albert, the long road home is nearly complete."Now everything has come into place," she said.

Amazon announcement: new Kindles. Hollywood: new worries.

Amazon announcement of seven new Kindles is a boon for consumers. But Hollywood worries the Amazon announcement will speed the move from buying to renting movies.

Amazon Kindle Vice President Peter Larsen holds the Kindle Fire HD at the introduction of seven new Kindle devices in Santa Monica, Calif., Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012. The Amazon announcement of new tablets may push consumers to buy more tablets, a trend that worries Hollywood.

Amazon.com Inc.?s seven new versions of its Kindle offer consumers more choices in the rapidly expanding tablet market.

But for Hollywood, the news is decidedly mixed.

At an invitation-only Santa Monica, Calif., event Thursday, the online retailer introduced its new Kindle Paperwhite e-reader, which Chief Executive Jeff Bezos described as ?thinner than a magazine and lighter than a paperback,? and a Kindle Fire HD tablet, which boasts features such as X-ray for Movies, an application allowing the viewer to look up information about any film with a tap of the finger.

Amazon?s?prodigious device lineup ? with tablets and e-readers ranging from $69 to $599 ? suggests a direct challenge to market leader Apple Inc. But these gadgets advance a different goal: to broaden access toAmazon?s?growing library of movies and television shows.

?We want to make money when people use our devices, not when they buy our devices,? Bezos told the crowd of about 250 that had gathered for the Amazon announcement.

The rabbit-like proliferation of these devices has spurred media viewing, as consumers increasingly use go-anywhere screens in place of a second TV in the home. Although on the surface the explosion of new screens would suggest an opportunity for film and television studios, the reality is more complex.

Although millions of consumers have paid $830 for a shiny new Apple iPad or $199 for Google Inc.?s rival Nexus 7 tablet or the Barnes & Noble Inc.?s Nook, they?re still looking for the cheapest way to watch movies and TV shows on these devices, media analysts say. Consumers have been moving away from purchases in favor of inexpensive alternatives such as movie rentals or online subscription streaming services such as Netflix, which return less money to the studios.

?As these new portable technologies exploded in the last two years, this has just accelerated the trend,? said Tom Adams, principal media analyst for researcher IHS Screen Digest, noting that purchasing has been declining since 2007.

This shift away from ownership is reflected in the most recent report of consumer spending on home entertainment. Purchases of DVDs, Blu-ray discs and digital titles in the first six months declined 2 percent from the first half of 2011. At the same time, spending on subscription streaming has risen exponentially, to $1.1 billion in the first half from $208.2 million a year earlier, according to a report from the Digital Entertainment Group.

Tablets are helping drive changes in how media is viewed in the home.

Some 126.6 million tablets are expected to be shipped worldwide this year, a leap of 56 percent from 2011, according to researcher IHS iSuppli. Apple continues to dominate the tablet market, which it ignited with the 2010 introduction of the iPad. The Cupertino, Calif., technology giant has sold some 84 million tablets and is rumored to be developing an iPad Mini to compete with rival gadgets with lower price tags. Other entrants ? from?Amazon?s?Kindle Fire to the Galaxy Tab from Samsung to other tablets powered by Google?s Android operating system ? are expanding the market.

?We?re going to see rapidly declining prices and continuing adoption of tablets by Americans,? said Bill Niemeyer, a senior analyst at the Diffusion Group, a consulting and research firm. ?And they?re not just buying one. We?re talking about multiple tablets in a household. Instead of buying a small TV for the bedroom, they?re using a tablet. The big-screen TV in the living room is not going away, but the second and third TVs ? those are going to increasingly be replaced by tablets.?

That?s both an opportunity and a challenge for the television networks, Niemeyer said, depending on whether they?re able to take advantage of the surging tablet market.

Audiobooks are great for the car. Textual books? Not so much. Now Amazon is bringing those two great experiences together and letting you pick up in text right where your audio book left off. So, if you've listened half-way through chapter three while in the car but you feel like reading something after you get home, your Kindle will bring you in the text exactly to where you stopped listening. And, in the morning when it's time to commute back to the office, the audio version will skip ahead as appropriate!

Amazon also announced Whispersync for Games, which would allow game developers to store game progress in the cloud. Sick of re-starting Angry Birds every time you get a new device? Never again. Take that, piggies.

Mimio And MDR Survey: BYOT Initiatives About to Take Off - Adrenna

CAMBRIDGE, MA ? Sept. 6, 2012 ? Bob Dylan?s lyrics, ?The times, they are a-changin?,? have never been more appropriate then they are right now. Just a few years ago, the notion of using a smartphone as a legitimate learning tool seemed improbable, if not out and out foolish. Students, in most cases were either prohibited from bringing their mobile phones to school, or at the very least told to leave them in their lockers or turned off and stored in their backpacks during school hours. However, according to a recent survey conducted by MDR?s EdNET Insight research services for Mimio, what many students are going to hear is, ?Class turn on your mobile phone, it?s time to learn.?

The nine-question survey polled more than 150 educational professionals, including school district technology, instructional media services, and curriculum directors, coordinators and specialists. Respondents were asked the impact that consumer technology devices and bring-your-own-technology (BYOT) initiatives were likely to have on future interactive classroom planning and purchases.

Sixty-six percent of poll respondents indicated their district currently allow the use of consumer mobile devices like iPads, 69 percent use district-purchased classroom-specific devices like classroom response systems and only 18 percent use student-owned mobile devices such as smartphones or laptops. But over 44 percent of the respondents plan to move to student-owned or BYOT devices within the next three years.

?This is an exciting time in K-12 education; educators are not only realizing the importance of bringing schools into the 21st century by finding smart ways to integrate technology and software into the learning process, but they are actively embracing the combining of BYOT and adaptive instructional software,? said Manny Perez, general manager at Mimio. ?What was once an idea on how to fuse consumer devices in the classroom, is now becoming a reality.?

Those surveyed were also asked how the consumer (district- or student-owned) mobile devices are used in classrooms, selecting as many options as applied. Fifty-six percent indicated the devices were used for research, reference, and note taking while 47 percent used the devices with school- or district-approved software for instruction or assessment.

When asked how consumer (district- or student-owned) mobile devices are affecting technology purchase plans for each of the following ? student device technology purchases, wireless infrastructure, or classroom technology purchases ? plans for wireless infrastructure showed the strongest positive purchase impact at 74 percent. Plans for classroom technology showed a somewhat strong positive purchase impact at 51 percent.

?It?s relatively straightforward to conclude that the greatest impact on purchase plans for wireless infrastructure have to do with the need for greater network capacity and bandwidth to support consumer mobile devices.? added Perez.

When asked to think forward one to three years and indicate what impact the integration of consumer mobile devices (district- or student-owned) will have on the use of certain technologies like interactive whiteboards, document cameras, classroom response devices, adaptive instructional software and adaptive assessment software, 75 percent of respondents thought adaptive instructional software would see increased use.

The survey takers were also asked about the issues they saw as standing in the way of greater use of student-owned devices in classrooms. Eighty percent cited training on the effective classroom use of the devices as their primary concern.

Perez continued, ?Amidst this mobile revolution, it?s important that we also support our teachers so they aren?t applying old pedagogy to new technology. The penetration of mobile devices in schools and districts is moving at a very rapid pace. And why not let students use the tech tools they?re already familiar with to enhance their learning? But for everyone to thrive, we need to figure out the best way of integrating classroom technologies, adaptive curriculum solutions, and mobile devices.?
