Ohio State Football: Keys for Surprising Buckeyes to Stay Undefeated

The trio of teams atop the BCS standings may be the teams getting all the attention for their undefeated campaign, but the Ohio State Buckeyes are still lingering as an undefeated team possibly ready to crash the party.

They obviously cannot play in a bowl game due to NCAA sanctions. However, with Notre Dame, Kansas State and Oregon all having difficult games remaining, there is a possibility that the Buckeyes could thumb their nose at the system as the FBS' only undefeated team come January.

Like the other squads, it won't be an easy task. The Buckeyes finish up their schedule against the Wisconsin Badgers and Michigan Wolverines, two teams that could see each other in the Big Ten championship game.

That means it goes without saying that Urban Meyer's squad will have a difficult time keeping their record unblemished. With that in mind, here is a look at what the Buckeyes must do to defeat Wisconsin and Michigan.

?

Pocket-Passing Improvement From Braxton Miller

Though he hasn't been dreadful by any stretch, the cracks in Braxton Miller's armor have begun to show lately. The?scintillating?sophomore has turned in below-average performances in two of the last three weeks and has especially struggled in the passing game.

In wins against Penn State and Purdue, Miller went a combined 16-of-39 (41 percent) passing for just 256 yards and one touchdown against two interceptions. And those struggles aren't exactly new, either.

Dating back to the Nebraska game on Oct. 6, Miller has completed fewer than 60 percent of his passes in four of the past five games. Coming into the final two weeks of the season, Miller's?inaccuracy?could come back to haunt the Buckeyes, especially against Wisconsin.

The Badgers have the best run defense in the Big Ten, meaning Miller won't be able to use his feet to make up for his throwing deficiencies. We saw the Buckeyes quarterback excel through the air earlier this season, so he'll need to revert to that form for Ohio State to keep its undefeated dream alive.?

?

Carlos Hyde's Continued Ascent

Where the passing game will be vital to beating Wisconsin, running back Carlos Hyde will have to soar against rival Michigan.

The Wolverines come into Week 12 as easily the best pass defense in the Big Ten. Giving up a meager 149.2 yards per game thus far and allowing opposing quarterbacks to complete just 56 percent of their passes, the secondary has been a stalwart unit that has kept Michigan's season afloat.

On the other hand, the team is far more vulnerable against the run. Though continually improving throughout the season, the Wolverines front seven still has problems that leave Michigan as a middle-of-the-pack run defense.

That should lead to some open running lanes for Hyde, who has been phenomenal after struggling early in the season. Over Ohio State's past five contests, the junior back has rushed for 628 yards and 11 touchdowns, which has helped keep the offense churning despite Miller's lack of passing prowess.

?

Stop the Run

While Wisconsin and Michigan may have differing strengths on defense, both rely heavily on the run offensively. Both teams are mired in frustrating quarterback?fiascoes, with injuries to starters thrusting Curtis Phillips (Badgers) and Devin Gardner (Wolverines) into the starting lineup.

Though both signal-callers have done well in limited work, neither Gardner nor Phillips are the type of quarterbacks who can take advantage of the Buckeyes'?limitations?in pass defense. Instead, both teams will try to pound the rock, albeit in different ways.

Wisconsin will employ a power ground game Montee Ball and James White. The former is one of the best running backs in the nation, while the latter can take off for a massive gain at any minute.

Meanwhile, Michigan will rely on Gardner (or Denard Robinson if he returns in time) to use his feet to set up both the run and pass.

If Ohio State is unable to halt either one of those attacks, Gardner and Phillips may be able to find even larger holes in the Buckeyes' secondary. On the other hand, a run-stuffing emphasis may wind up being the ultimate catalyst to finishing off the team's shocking undefeated run.

Frida Kahlo and her house ? Why Evolution Is True

While in Mexico City, I made a special pilgrimage to the homes of Leon Trotsky and Frida Kahlo. They were of course known to each other: it was at the urging of Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera that Trotsky, on the run from Stalin?s agents, sought refuge in Mexico, building a compound only four blocks from Kahlo?s house. Frida and Trotsky were also lovers: both she and Diego, though married (and divorced and then remarried) had multiple partners.

But I?m getting ahead of myself, and will have more on Trotsky?s house and Rivera later. Today?s post is on the famous?Frida Kahlo, painter, political activist, and lover of life. ?If you haven?t heard of her, which I doubt, just read the Wikipedia entry at the link above. She was a superb painter, outstripping, in my opinion, her husband Rivera, a renowned muralist. And while Rivera was the more famous when they both lived, with the passage of time it is Kahlo who is seen as the better artist. She has become an icon because of her talent, colorful life, deeply ingrained leftist politics, and achievements won in the face of terrible adversity.

Born in 1907, Kahlo (given name: Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calder?n)?lived only 47 years. She did 143 paintings, more than a third of them self-portraits. Her brief life is connected with her solipsistic oeuvre, for she was an invalid, in great pain most of her life, and portrayed her suffering in her work. Possibly born with spina bifida (see ?Neurological deficits in the life and work of Frida Kahlo? by Valmantas Budrys in the?European Journal of Neurology), she also contracted polio as a child. That withered one of her legs, explaining why she always wore long skirts.

As if that wasn?t enough, at eighteen she was in a horrible accident, with her bus colliding with a streetcar, breaking her spine and shattering her pelvis. From then until her death she was in nearly constant agony, spending months at a time in bed, encased in plaster casts, suffering over 30 operations, and forced to paint while on her back or in a wheelchair. ?She had three forced abortions (the accident thrust a metal pole into her abdomen, rendering her unable to give birth), and in the last year of her life her leg was amputated because of gangrene.

Despite that, Kahlo had an enduring?joie de vivre and a stocism worked out through her art, which depicted her fantasies of childbirth and her visions of herself as a broken person, but also her deep love of life and nature (see below). And, of course, there were her famous eyebrows. . .

I spent several hours in Frida?s house (called, for obvious reasons, ?La Casa Azul?): the place where she was born, lived for 25 years with Rivera, and died. It?s now the?Frida Kahlo Museum, located in the lovely Coyoac?n section of Mexico City.

Here are some photos of my visit (click all pictures to enlarge).

La Casa Azul from the street:

The couryard. The paint on the wall reads ?Frieda and Diego lived in this house: 1929-1954?:

Young Frida:

Older Frida with Diego; I?d appreciate it if some Spanish-speaking reader would translate!

Though they both had multiple affairs, they loved each other very much (see the letters below). Here?s what Kahlo once wrote:

?No one will ever know how much I love Diego? if I had health I would give it to him; if I had youth, he could have it all. I am not only his mother, I am the embryo, the seed, the first cell from whose potential he was engendered. I am he, beginning from the most primitive? ancient cells, which over time have become ?feeling??.

And, near the end of his life, and remarried, Rivera wrote:

?Too late now I realized that the most wonderful part of my life had been my love for Frida.?

Here?s a love letter in English to Frida from one of her lovers, the architect Isamu Noguchi:

And a letter from Rivera to Kahlo, in Spanish. Again I ask a reader to translate:

Some of Frida?s paintings. There are not many in La Casa Azul; most are in museums. First, her family:

I found a photo of her painting that picture, flat on her back:

Frida Kahlo working in bed, 1952. Photo by Juan Guzman.

The painting below is one of my favorites, not least for the inscription at the bottom, ?Viva la Vida.? It?s not clear if it?s the last painting she ever did, but it is certain that the inscription was added only a few days before she died?and she knew she was dying. It?s incredibly poignant.

There?s a genre Mexican folk paintings, ?retablos?, that depict saints or the intercession of saints or angels to save someone in a horrible situation. Kahlo did several of these in her inimitable style. Again, translations appreciated.

A morbid fantasy of childbirth, perhaps reflecting one of her abortions:

And in her study was this teaching diagram, connected in some way I don?t know with the painting above and her medical condition.

A photo Frida in bed, being prayed for. This is probably staged (though she may well have been bedridden), and again I don?t have a translation.

Frida?s studio with its glorious light:

A?view of the studio from outside in the garden:

Her easel, wheelchair, and painting supplies:

Her crutches, leather corset, and plaster corsets for her torso, which she often decorated after they were removed:

Frida?s ?day? bed (there were ?day? and ?night? bedrooms), with a collection of butterflies to view when she was flat on her back:

Decorations in the ?night? bedroom:

I couldn?t resist a self-portrait in her bedroom:

The kitchen and dining space in the Casa Azul. What a lovely place to cook and eat!

Diego?s bedroom (they slept separately):

Here?s an inscription, apparently in Diego?s handwriting, preserved on the wall outside his bedroom. A Spanish-speaking friend translated the first part of this as ??War starts Next summer. 1953?, but I couldn?t make out the rest. Perhaps a reader can help with that.

Here is an explanation of the two ceramic clocks below:

A fountain in the garden, inlaid with frogs:

She died painfully; one chronology says this:

In early June [1954] Frida contracts bronchial pneumonia. She is confined to bed. In late June her health seems to improve.

On July 2nd, while still convalescing, and against the advice of her doctors, she and Diego take part in a demonstration against North-American intervention in Guatemala. This would be her?last public appearance. As a result of her actions, her pneumonia worsens.

On July 13th, seriously ill with pneumonia, Frida dies in the Blue House. Cause of death is officially reported as ?pulmonary embolism?. Suicide is suspected but never confirmed. Her?last written diary entry?reads: ?I hope the exit is joyful ? and I hope never to return ? Frida?.

That afternoon her coffin is placed in the entrance hall of the Palacio de Bellas Artes, attended by an honor guard.

On the 14th of July, more than 600 people came to pay their last respects. Her body was cremated later that day. Her ashes were placed in a pre-Columbian urn which is on display in the ?Blue House? that she shared with Rivera.

I missed the urn, but here?s Frida?s death mask, lying on the bed where she died.

Below is an hour-long biopic of Frida, and you can see two home movies of her and Diego (don?t miss!) here. (Note that she wasn?t born in 1910, but three years earlier; she always claimed 1910 so her birth would coincide with the Mexican Revolution.

The best biography of Kahlo I?ve found (and read) is Hayden Herrera?s?Frida: A Biography of Frida Kahlo. There is also of course?the 2002 movie ?Frida?, with Salma Hayek in the starring role. The movie is pretty good but not a masterpiece; Hayek, however, bears a remarkable resemblance to Kahlo.

A nice gallery of Kahlo?s paintings is?here, and a ton of information about her life is?here.

Viva la vida!

Facebook stock jumps even as lockup period expires

Facebook stock soared over 7 percent despite more than 850 million shares in the company being freed up for sale. Facebook stock was expected to take a dive Wednesday, when the company's biggest lockup period preventing insiders from selling the stock expired.

Despite the end pf a lockup that prevented insiders from selling their shares, Facebook stock soared by 7 percent Wednesday.

Shares of?Facebook?Inc. are up $1.48, or 7.5 percent, at $21.34.?Facebook?went public in May at $38 in a much-hyped initial public offering of stock that turned out to be a letdown for investors. Its stock price hasn't hit $38 since.

Wednesday marked the expiration of?Facebook's?biggest lock-up period, which is a time following an IPO that prevents insiders from selling stock. In all, 773 million shares became eligible for sale, along with 31 million restricted stock units. And about 48 million shares held by former?Facebook?employees also became eligible for sale, bringing the total to 852 million. These shares would be on top of what's already been available for trading, increasing the supply and potentially lowering the overall price.

Lock-ups are common after initial public stock offerings and are designed to prevent a stock from experiencing the kind of volatility that might occur if too many shareholders decide to sell all at once.

The previous lock-up expired on Oct. 29, when U.S. stock markets were closed because of Superstorm Sandy.?Facebook's?stock fell nearly 4 percent two days later, when the stock market reopened.

Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Youssef Squali believes a potential increase in the capital gains tax on Jan. 1, when Bush-era tax cuts would expire unless Congress acts, could pressure?Facebook's?stock. That said, he called the Menlo Park, Calif.-based social media company a "long-term winner."

Facebook's?stock saw its biggest one-day gain on Oct. 24, the day after the company reported stronger-than-expected third-quarter results and detailed for the first time how much money it made from mobile ads. The stock, which added 19 percent that day, closed at $23.23. Even with Wednesday's gain, it is still 8 percent below that price.

Ouch! Guy Fieri flamb?ed in NY Times restaurant review

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Guy Fieri may be rethinking his career choice after a merciless review in Wednesday's New York Times.

The hyper-caffeinated host of Food Network's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," was on the receiving end of a critical roasting courtesy of Times reviewer Pete Wells that would have left even the most hardened culinary maestro reaching for the serrated knife. His savaging of Fieri's Guy's American Kitchen & Bar in Times Square was delivered in a series of sardonic questions that poked fun at the celebrity chef's limp french fries, flavorless sauces and blue cocktails that "glow like nuclear waste." Even the crouton allotment on salads is met with derision.

"Were you struck by how very far from awesome the Awesome Pretzel Chicken Tenders are?" Wells wrote in The New York Times. "If you hadn't come up with the recipe yourself, would you ever guess that the shiny tissue of breading that exudes grease onto the plate contains either pretzels or smoked almonds? Did you discern any buttermilk or brine in the white meat, or did you think it tasted like chewy air?

"Why is one of the few things on your menu that can be eaten without fear or regret - a lunch-only sandwich of chopped soy-glazed pork with coleslaw and cucumbers - called a Roasted Pork Bahn Mi, when it resembles that item about as much as you resemble Emily Dickinson?"

It's enough to make Fieri's signature frosted tips fall out. But there's more.

"Is the entire restaurant a very expensive piece of conceptual art? Is the shapeless, structureless baked alaska that droops and slumps and collapses while you eat it, or don't eat it, supposed to be a representation in sugar and eggs of the experience of going insane?," Wells wrote. "Why did the toasted marshmallow taste like fish?"

Just in case readers missed the point, the New York Times helpfully summed up Wells' reaction to Guy's American Kitchen & Bar in a single word: poor.

Welcome to flavor town, indeed!

World's fastest-growing faith? A surprising answer : News Headlines ...

CWN - November 13, 2012

What is the world's fastest growing religion?

The answer from Philip Jenkins, a noted Baylor University scholar specializing in religious history, may come as a surprise. Islam is on the rise in the West, but elsewhere in the world the greatest growth is in Christianity. He concludes:

When I am asked about the world's fastest growing religion, then, I answer unequivocally: Islam. Or, Christianity outside Europe.

Affordable Health Insurance for Freelancers | Simplifythis

If there was anything holding you back from taking the leap between being an employee and a freelancer, it might well have been the loss of your company?s health plan. While the change of law in 1986 meant workers could carry on with the health benefits provided by their company if they resigned, this isn?t necessarily an affordable answer.

As well as paying a proportion of your wages to the health plan, your employer would likely have been making a contribution, so when you have to pick up the total payment towards this yourself, it can be quite expensive; you might need to drop down to a lower cost plan with fewer benefits to make it affordable. However, even if this option is taken up, it only allows your previous health plan to be extended for an 18 month period, so is not a long-term solution. Therefore, what are the options for affordable health insurance for freelancers?

Your local Chamber of Commerce

The Chamber of Commerce is an association that promotes and protects local businesses, including freelancers. They usually offer health plans for small businesses with two or more employees, though they also provide them for individuals who work alone. The health plans on offer can vary from one association to another, with some providing a standard plan and others offering some choice.

Reduced rates through a freelance organization

Part of the reason that you pay less for your health insurance when you are employed by a company is that they receive a group rate. However, it is still possible to receive such a discount through an association aimed at freelancers. One example is the Freelancers Union which is able to provide group discounts for those working freelance who are based in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut; though they can still provide health plans for workers in another 30 states. The National Association for the Self-Employed provide various discounted health plans and also have an arrangement where the health insurance premiums paid and expenses for non-insured medical costs ? such as visits to the doctor, prescription and over the counter medications, as well as vision care -are fully deductable against tax. These two associations cover all freelancers, but there might well be one specific to the industry area in which you work, for example the National Writers Union for freelance writers.

Use an insurance broker

An insurance broker can liaise with insurance companies for you and is meant to find you the best price for your circumstances. This option is probably suited to someone whose current medical conditions make it more difficult for them to obtain health insurance. Always thoroughly research brokers and ask for references to track down one that is reputable.

Take your chances

Lower monthly premiums can be obtained if you are prepared to pay a higher amount towards your own medical costs when you need to claim; for example you would pay say the first $5,000 and your insurer would then pay the remainder. This might sound like a bit of a risk, but it?s always preferable to be covered to some degree than not at all and consider it this way, isn?t it better to have to pay the first $5,000 than have to pay the full $35,000 after a serious accident? You might also be pleasantly surprised when you compare the various low rate premiums available, as some cover more than you think. If you go with this option, opening a Health Saving Account is a good idea, as this will help you to save the money that you would need to pay towards the first proportion of your medical expenses. You are currently able to contribute a maximum of $3,050 as an individual or up to $6,150 as a family each year into this account; contributions are also free from tax deduction.

Everyone?s situation is different, so each option will be suited to some people more than others. However, it doesn?t matter which option you pluck for, be sure to do your homework to ensure that all you think is covered by the plan actually is.

?

?

The decision to purchase a home abroad can potentially be quite daunting, as there are so many locations to choose from. ?However, there are several regions that, for a British holidaymaker, are both easy to access and incredibly enjoyable. ?Whether individuals enjoy noisy theme parks or quiet, unspoilt beaches and peaceful golf resorts, there is something out there for everyone.

Anyone looking to buy property overseas should look no further than one of these locations, which will certainly keep everyone in the family happy and provide many years of enjoyment.

Spain

Historically popular with British holiday goers, Spain has many excellent properties for sale, both on the mainland as well as on the Balearic Islands. ?With year-round warm weather and a lively atmosphere, the Spanish coast is a wonderful place to buy a holiday home. ?While demand is always high, there are many bargains to be had, and with its easy accessibility from the UK, visiting the country doesn?t have to be seasonal. ?Due to the popularity of this destination, renting out a holiday home can be highly profitable.

France

France is also a very popular and long-standing holiday destination with British holidaymakers. Due to its diverse environment and physical proximity, most people who own properties here drive rather than fly into the country. ?From small beach houses in Normandy to rural cottages in Provence, France is teeming with life, culture and fantastic food that is by no means limited to upscale restaurants. ?With picturesque venues to see almost everywhere, from mountains and breathtaking landscapes to urban sprawls, museums, galleries and ancient churches, there is an area of France for every type of holidaymaker.

Florida

The constant warmth of America?s Sunshine State means holiday goers may wish to investigate the fantastic selection of Florida houses for sale.? When not spending time in the area, renting out the holiday home can be a lucrative way to make use of the property. ?Packed with theme parks, golf resorts, golden beaches and restaurants for fine dining, Florida is an excellent location for families, as this fun-filled area has something to offer all year round. ?With no language barrier and hundreds of tourist attractions, it?s no surprise that buying a holiday home here is becoming more and more popular with Britons.

Portugal

Portugal is slowly becoming one of the most desirable holiday destinations in Europe due to its Mediterranean climate and beautiful landscape. ?Miles of unspoilt beaches line the Silver Coast, and the southern region of Algarve is an especially thriving holiday spot for golf and water sport enthusiasts. ?With its relaxing atmosphere and family-friendly beaches, Portugal would make an ideal location for purchasing a holiday home.

Italy

Spectacular scenery, amazing food, world-famous wines and historical architecture are just some of the reasons why Brits have always been drawn to Italy, especially to regions such as the Northern lakes and the beautiful Tuscan countryside, as well as big cities like Rome and Naples. ?The trend for buying holiday properties in Italy is now spreading to the country?s central and rural areas such as Abruzzo and Puglia. ?Wherever the location, holiday goers will enjoy excellent food, friendly people and gorgeous views.
