Nutrition Facts for Supermarket Prepared Foods - Shape Magazine

Last night I had to make a run to the supermarket right around dinnertime. Stomach rumbling, I decided to eat first, then shop, but as I browsed the salad bar, soup station, and prepared food section, I became increasingly frustrated. There were ingredient cards for some, but not most of the items, and none had nutrition facts info. I wound up waiting until I got home because I just didn?t want to play the guessing game.

Apparently the folks at Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) feel the same way. The nonprofit watchdog group conducted a review, which found that of the 36 retail chains that sell prepared foods, most employ registered dietitians, but they don?t offer visible nutrition info. CSPI believes that if chain restaurants have to disclose calorie facts, it?s only fair that supermarkets and convenience stores that sell prepared foods should be required to do the same.

I?m actually more interested in ingredients than calories myself, but I?d really love all the info that?s available on a packaged food label so I know exactly what I?m spending my dollars on and what I?m putting in my body. Access to that info online, from restaurant chains like Panera Bread and Au Bon Pain, has helped me guide my clients? choices.

For example, Chipotle?s nutrition calculator helped me show one of my clients that ordering a burrito bowl with brown rice, fajita veggies, black beans, salsa, guacamole, and lettuce instead of her usual burrito with no rice, black beans, fajita veggies, salsa, sour cream, and cheese saved about 200 calories, slashed 12 grams of saturated fat, and added 7 grams of filling fiber.

A national survey commissioned by CSPI revealed that more than 80 percent of Americans are in favor of having calorie information for grocery store restaurant-style foods such as rotisserie chicken, sub sandwiches, and soups. What do you think? How often do you buy dinner at your local supermarket? Does having this info at places like Starbucks or restaurants change how you order? Please share you thoughts @cynthiasass and @Shape_Magazine.

Marriott Breadsall Priory ? He Says? She Says ... - Your Golf Travel

We all love to escape for a well deserved weekend of golf, pampering and over indulgence but for those with ?a better half? it can often be difficult to drop everything and leave them in the lurch for the weekend without incurring some serious ?I owe you points?! Thankfully, there are plenty of places in the UK & Ireland where golfers and non golfers alike can enjoy a few days of peace and quiet. With such venues in mind we thought we would ask a guy from yourgolftravel.com and a gal from Spabreaks.com for their take on the Marriott Breadsall Priory Resort in the Midlands. Read on to see what they had to say?

What did you like the most about Breadsall Priory?

He Says: I would say the wealth of facilities and services on resort is the biggest plus point. Not only do you have two golf courses but the practice facilities are of a decent standard and on top of that, the leisure facilities including the spa are excellent. There is certainly plenty to fill your time on a weekend break!

She Says: The grounds are amazing ? you come up to the hotel via a massive driveway so by the time you are greeted by the stately home that is Marriott Breadsall Priory you already feel enveloped in the Derbyshire countryside ? in short, it appears idyllic.

What did you think of the spa?

He Says: I usually don?t go in for treatments ? I would rather just chill out in the sauna, Jacuzzi etc etc? ? but this time I booked a massage which was actually a great way of recharging the batteries for not only the night ahead but the next day?s golf. I am giving my masseuse some credit for me playing so well on day two compared with day one. I was nice and relaxed from start to finish.

breadsall-priory-spa

The Breadsall Priory Spa is a great place to relax and recharge the batteries for an evening on over indulgence in the restaurants and bars!

She Says: The Priory Retreat is very small and intimate in a courtyard space within the hotel, so you do have to go outside to get to it.? Being part of the Marriott brand, it has all the leisure facilities you could ask for, but from an exercise front I always like to get outside, so the jogging trail and tennis courts in the grounds are a great addition.? On a more decadent note, the spa?s manicure stations are a particular asset.

How was the golf course?

He Says: Neither course (the Priory Course and the Moorland Course) is particularly long but both are tricky enough (a little fiddly in places but fun all the same!) to pose a good test for the majority of golfers. Straight hitting is a must as is good course management and club selection as there are plenty of undulations and elevation changes to negotiate. They are both what I would call thinking man?s courses!

breadsall-priory-golf

Both courses at Breadsall Priory are tight and tricky. Patience is the key here.

She Says: The golf courses really makes up the whole modern character of the hotel, adding to the spa and general escapist element by providing something beautiful to look at!

What?s the restaurant like?

He Says: The Clubhouse is of a good standard and serves typical pub type grub which is just what you want when you come off the golf course. The Priory Restaurant on the other hand serves more sophisticated food and is a great shout for a romantic meal for two. I think I heard someone say it had been awarded a AA Rosette which wouldn?t surprise me in the slightest.

breadsall-priory-restaurant

The Priory Restaurant is the dining highlight of the resort and a great place to sample some fine dining.

She Says: I ate in the Tempo Restaurant which overlooks the pool and is a very casual environment.? The food is excellent quality and there are different seating areas that will suit different guests whether you are here with a group of friends or as a couple.? In the summer time there is space to sit outside as well.

What else is there to do at Marriott Breadsall Priory?

He Says: Well outside of the golf I didn?t have tom for much apart from a quick trip to the spa and evening entertainment in the restaurants and bars! Next time I return though I will take the kids and make the trip to Alton Towers which is just a short drive away.

She Says: On site, if the weather suits (or if you are feeling brave) the jogging trail is an alternative way to explore the grounds or get a bit of exercise.? If you fancy venturing a little further however, Chatsworth House ? home of the Duke of Devonshire ? is nearby, surrounded of course, by the Peak District.

Who would you recommend it for?

He Says: Anyone really? Thanks to the two golf courses it is ideal for a ?lads? golf trip but I enjoyed a lovely weekend break with my other half and I wouldn?t hesitate to recommend it for short breaks with the nippers?although I would probably stop short of taking kids for more than one or two nights.

She Says: ?I would recommend it mostly for couples ? the hotel caters to a lot of weddings and that is very much thanks to the scenery and architecture.? It?s also a good escape for mother/daughter breaks.

What is your top tip for visiting ??

He Says: I would say to golfers to be patient around the courses. As I said they are both pretty short but they can be testing. Don?t lick your lips when you see the yardages on the scorecard because, as with many a golf course, it isn?t a simple case of brawn over brains!

She Says: Take yourself for a walk around the grounds ? they are really impressive and will certainly add to your spa experience.

Small Business Accounting Software -- So Many Options, So Little ...

everystockphoto 177221 m Small Business Accounting Software So Many Options, So Little Time

That?s right. Tax time is right around the corner and if you haven?t been keeping track of your small business finances, you could be in for a long few months.

Of course, just like with personal finances, there are many options when it comes to software for small business that will help to keep accurate records, no matter how small or large your may be.

While you may not be able to use one of these programs to get your affairs in order this year (unless you put in the man hours to get it all in the database), there is always time to prep for next year, the year after that, and the year after that, for years to come.

But of all the options out there for small businesses to choose from, which one is the best? Here are two of the best small business accounting software options, with regard to accounts payable and receivable, payroll, inventory, banking, and general ledger.

Bookkeeper

Bookkeeper isn?t one of the more popular options, or one of the software programs that people see on commercials, but it should be. Maybe it will be in the future.

For whatever reason, accounts payable is a little easier to use than accounts receivable on Bookkeeper.

Payroll is fantastic on Bookkeeper because of its ease of use, its functionality within the software itself, and because it makes life a little easier when it comes to getting those checks out. (Note: see below for possible hang-up in payroll)

Keeping track of inventory is not quite as easy as it is on other programs, which means you still need to put in a few man hours to keep track of everything coming in and going out.

Banking on Bookkeeper is easy, as well, and has excellent functionality. You can link your accounts to the program and make transfers through the system as needed.

The general ledger portion of the software beats many of the options for your small business accounting software. Because this is a crucial portion of any small business?s day-to-day operation, Bookkeeper is a serious contender for those that see the general ledger as a make-or-break component.

Unfortunately, Bookkeeper has a few pitfalls for any small business. It?s missing some of those additional features that make life a little easier on the payroll side of things. For instance, there is no direct deposit functionality in the software, which can be a real pain to set up by hand.

Also, you can only set up the program on one PC and you don?t get remote access, so again, this could be a deal-breaker if your small business is expanding. But, for the price ($39.95), you won?t get better accounting software for the price.

Quickbooks Pro

Quickbooks from Intuit is definitely one of those accounting software programs that you?ll see on commercials. It?s because they are one of the most popular small business accounting programs in the world. For good reason, too. The program was rated among the best small business accounting programs by PC Magazine.

First we?ll get the cons out of the way: this version of the popular accounting software does not keep track of inventory location, which means you?ve got to do a little manual labor to find your products. Also, it doesn?t support FIFO or LIFO cost methods, which can make it difficult to see how much money you?ve got tied up in inventory at any given time.

With that said, this program is still among the best.

Its accounts payable and receivable are easy to use, but Bookkeeper has a leg up here because of its superior accounts payable program.

Where Quickbooks Pro really succeeds, though, is in its payroll functionality. It makes this complex part of small business very, very easy to use, so even if you are not an accountant, you can probably take care of this using the software.

As was noted earlier, the inventory functionality is somewhat lacking, but if you don?t need to know exactly where you inventory is, or how much capital you?ve got, you can still keep track of inventory with ease.

The banking functionality is easy to use and you can hook this one up to your bank pretty easily, as well.

The general ledger is where Quickbooks really shines. While this can be a daunting task for many small business owners, Quickbooks makes it easy to keep track of the day-to-day expenses any company puts out there at any given time.

At $183.96, you get a whole lot of bang for your buck from Quickbooks.

Atrix HD soak test to get underway soon

Atrix HD

Motorola Atrix HD users enrolled in the Motorola Feedback Network are getting a message about an upcoming soak test that should commence soon. There's no news about what version being tested, so we can't say this is the promised Jelly Bean update, but we certainly can hope. Officially, the communication is pretty generic, and pretty standard as far as soak test invites go.

We are inviting owners of the Motorola ATRIX HD on AT&T to participate in an early preview of a new software release, and provide feedback. If you are not currently using a Motorola ATRIX HD, please excuse and ignore this email.

The Atrix HD is one of the handful of phones that Motorola says they will continue to support past ICS, so any mention of a software update gets us interested. When the push goes out to testers, I imagine we'll know a little more.

Thanks, Anon!

APNewsBreak: FBI releases Stalin's daughter files

FILE - This April 13, 2010 file photo shows Lana Peters, or Svetlana Alliluyeva, on a rural road outside Richland Center, Wis. Newly declassified files show the FBI was gathering details from informants on how Peters' arrival in the United State was affecting international relations after her high-profile defection in 1967. (AP) ? Newly declassified documents show the FBI kept close tabs on Soviet dictator Josef Stalin's only daughter after her high profile defection to the United States in 1967, gathering details from informants about how her arrival was affecting international relations.

The documents were released Monday to The Associated Press under the Freedom of Information Act following Lana Peters' death last year at age 85 in a Wisconsin nursing home. Her defection to the West during the Cold War embarrassed the ruling communists and made her a best-selling author. And her move was a public relations coup for the U.S.

One April 28, 1967, memo details a conversation with a confidential source who said the defection would have a "profound effect" for anyone else thinking of trying to leave the Soviet Union. The source claimed to have discussed the defection with a Czechoslovak journalist covering the United Nations and a member of the Czechoslovakia "Mission staff."

"Our source opined that the United States Government exhibited a high degree of maturity, dignity and understanding during this period," according to the memo, prominently marked "SECRET" at the top and bottom. "It cannot help but have a profound effect upon anyone who is considering a similar solution to an unsatisfactory life in a Soviet bloc country."

When she defected, Peters was known as Svetlana Alliluyeva, but she went by Lana Peters following her 1970 marriage to William Wesley Peters, an apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright. Peters said her defection was partly motivated by the Soviet authorities' poor treatment of her late husband, Brijesh Singh, a prominent figure in the Indian Communist Party.

Another memo dated June 2, 1967, describes a conversation an unnamed FBI source had with Mikhail Trepykhalin, identified as the second secretary at the Soviet Embassy in Washington, D.C.

The source said Trepykhalin told him the Soviets were "very unhappy over her defection" and asked whether the U.S. would use it "for propaganda purposes." Trepykhalin "was afraid forces in the U.S. would use her to destroy relationships between the USSR and this country," the source told the FBI.

An unnamed informant in another secret memo from that month said Soviet authorities were not disturbed by the defection because it would "further discredit Stalin's name and family."

Stalin, a dictator held responsible for sending millions of his countrymen to their deaths in labor camps, led the Soviet Union from 1924 until his death in 1953. Stalin's successor, Nikita Khrushchev, denounced him three years later as a brutal despot.

And even though Peters denounced communism and her father's policies, Stalin's legacy haunted her in the United States.

"People say, 'Stalin's daughter, Stalin's daughter,' meaning I'm supposed to walk around with a rifle and shoot the Americans," she said in a 2007 interview for a documentary about her life. "Or they say, 'No, she came here. She is an American citizen.' That means I'm with a bomb against the others. No, I'm neither one. I'm somewhere in between."

Another FBI source, reporting on a 1968 May Day celebration in Moscow, said "the general feeling" is that she defected "because she was attracted by the material wealth in the United States."

George Kennan, a key figure in the Cold War and a former U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, advised the FBI that he and Alliluyeva were concerned Soviet agents would try to contact her, a December 1967 memo reveals. The memo notes that no security arrangements were made for Peters and no other documents in the file indicate that the KGB ever tracked her down.

Many of the 233 pages released to the AP were heavily redacted, with the FBI citing exemptions allowed under the law for concerns related to foreign policy, revealing confidential sources and releasing medical or other information that is a "clearly unwarranted invasion of personal privacy."

An additional 94 pages were found in her file but not released because the FBI said they contain information involving other government agencies. Those pages remain under government review.

More than half of the pages released to AP were copies of newspaper articles and other media coverage of her defection.

In one somewhat humorous exchange, a person whose name was redacted wrote directly to then-FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover asking that Hoover forward a letter on to "Joe Stalin's daughter." The author tells Hoover he can feel free to censor, alter or delete any portion of his letter to her as needed.

"I believe, Svetlana has given us (FREE NATIONS) the greatest opportunity to enlighten (and educate) the RUSSIAN people (and also those within the Communist controlled nations), as to what they are losing in continuing their impossible, or unacceptable present governmental system of Administration," the letter to Hoover said.

The file contains Hoover's terse three-sentence response denying his request, saying the FBI does not forward mail.

"I trust you will understand," Hoover wrote.
