Romney earns PolitiFact?s ?Lie of the Year? for Jeeps made in China

DEAR ABBY: I have been married for 14 years to a man who had two failed marriages. I never felt insecure in my married life until I read his answers to a Yahoo Answers poll that asked, "Do you dream about the one that got away?" and, "Have you found the love of your life?"My husband responded that he thinks about her very often, especially on her birthday and Valentine's Day. To the other question he replied he had found the love of his life, but the relationship had ended in divorce, which he admitted was his fault.I know he was talking about his first wife. I feel so sad and insecure. ...

Shocked friends: Mall gunman was fun, sweet

Police say they still don't know why 22-year old Jacob Tyler Roberts, who hadno criminal past, shot two people dead and injured a third before turning his gun on himself at an Oregon mall.NBC's Mike Taibbi reports.

By Elizabeth Chuck, NBC News

The man who shot two people to death and wounded another at an Oregon shopping mall had suffered a series of setbacks in the past year, but those who knew him say they are mystified by his violent assault.

Jacob Tyler Roberts, 22, had lost his driver's license after a couple of speeding tickets, broken up with his girlfriend, been evicted from his apartment, then quit his job and told friends he was going to Hawaii -- only to apparently miss his flight last weekend.

Roberts was identified Wednesday as the man who opened fire in the food court of the crowded Clackamas Town Center southeast of Portland.?Steven Mathew Forsyth, 45, and?Cindy Ann Yuille, 54, were killed, and Kristina Shevchenko, 15, was wounded?before Roberts turned the gun on himself.

?

Police say Roberts did not have a criminal history, but that he stole the AR-15 rifle that he used in the shooting. Roberts killed himself at the mall.

Roberts' Facebook page listed shooting as one of his interests, NBC Mike Taibbi reported on TODAY on Thursday.

Before quitting his job, Roberts told co-workers at the sandwich shop where he worked that he had inherited money and planned to travel to Hawaii and perhaps move there. His ex-girlfriend, Hannah Sansburn, 20, told ABC News that he sold all of his belongings in preparation for moving.

"He had his plane ticket and was ready to go," she said. "He was supposed to catch a flight Saturday and I texted him, and asked how his flight went, and he told me, 'Oh, I got drunk and didn't make the flight.'"

The last time Sansburn saw Roberts -- a week ago -- she noticed he seemed "numb."

"I just talked to him, stayed the night with him, and he just seemed numb if anything. He's usually very bubbly and happy, and I asked him why, what had changed, and [he] said 'nothing.' He just had so much he had to do before he went to Hawaii that he was trying to distance himself from Portland," Sansburn said.

She told ABC she wondered if Roberts was ever really planning on moving, and said she was shocked he could have committed such a terrible act.

?The person I knew would have never ever done anything like done this. Not in a million years,? she said. ?He was just too sweet. Never mean to anybody.?

According to?a profile in The Oregonian newspaper, a friend of Roberts' stepfather said Roberts had planned to enter the Navy after graduating from Oregon City High School in 2008 but couldn't because of an injury.

"After that, everything kind of fell apart for him," Rosalie DeDore told the newspaper.

Oregon mall gunman ID'd; motive unclear?

A friend, Benjamin Eshbach, described Roberts as fun and light-hearted.

"It's a very difficult thing to wrap my head around," Eshbach, who said he played chess with Roberts and went out with him, told the newspaper. "It's hard to imagine him being any other way. Something doesn't fit."

In recent months, Roberts had moved into the basement of a small home in southeast Portland with two roommates, according to neighbors?who told NBC station KGW that he seemed like a nice man.

Roberts went to Clackamas Community College in 2009, but withdrew after his first year of classes, reported KGW. In high school, he had been an "average" student who didn't do extracurricular activities, and had no disciplinary actions on his record, district officials told KGW.

On Wednesday, Roberts' aunt?provided a hand-written note?through a friend to reporters?apologizing for his behavior. KATU of Portland reported that family friends said?Tami Roberts is Roberts' aunt but raised him. She wrote that she?had "no understanding or explanation for her son's behavior" and adding she was "very sad and wants everyone to know that she is so sorry what Jake did, it's so out of his character."

Robot Glider Detects Rogue Waves and Other Ocean Anomalies Missed by Satellites

PAPA MAU: Liquid Robotics' wave-powered sub Papa Mau autonomously traveled 16,668 kilometers across the Pacific Ocean, in the process studying rogue waves and other oceanic phenomena undetected by satellites in the worldwide communications system. Image: Courtesy of Liquid Robotics

When the robotic Papa Mau completed its 16,668-kilometer scientific expedition across the Pacific Ocean last month, the surfboard-sized submarine did more than set a new world record for the longest distance traveled by an autonomous vehicle. The wave-powered sub reached Australia?s Hervey Bay with a load of data that will keep marine biologists, oceanographers and other scientists busy for quite some time, including observations of rogue waves that satellites failed to detect during the Papa Mau?s year-long voyage.

On what appeared to be a calm, sunny day last February, Papa Mau transmitted data indicating rough weather?six- to 7.6-meter rolling seas and winds blowing at 50 knots. The sub had been at sea since November 17, 2011, the first of a fleet of four robot subs (called Wave Gliders) launched from San Francisco Bay by Liquid Robotics, Inc.

?There was not a cloud in the sky, nothing was on the satellites,? says Bill Vass, CEO of Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Liquid Robotics, a provider of ocean data services for shipping, energy and environmental companies. ?And we said, ?Oh, there must be something wrong with [the submarine?s] sensors.? But when all four robots saw [the waves], we turned on the cameras. It was pretty astounding.? Nearby, an unfortunate sailboat lost its mast and was rescued by a Dutch freighter. ?Besides that sailboat, the freighter, and us, no one would have seen those waves,? Vass adds.

Maritime history is filled with fantastical stories of rogue waves that appear suddenly, like walls of water, to swamp unsuspecting sailors and their vessels. As recently as 2010, several such monstrous waves hit the cruise ship Louis Majesty in the Mediterranean off the coast of Spain, an incident that killed two people and injured six.

Satellites in the worldwide communications system used for transmitting data from offshore locations ?make their best guess? from 400 kilometers up about weather conditions at sea, including wind speeds and wave heights, according to Vass. They not only miss giant waves but are ?tremendously inaccurate? in estimating the speeds of current and wave direction, he says

After comparing satellite data with his robots? findings, Vass believes satellites detect surface shear, which comes from winds and broad currents. There are two dimensions to surface shear. One is the difference in currents at the ocean?s surface compared with those flowing at lower levels of the water column. The second occurs when two currents collide and generate smaller localized eddies and turbulence. Both are important to know when determining circulation and its effect on shipping energy usage and fuel consumption.

?We?re finding the satellites are way off for microcurrents,? Vass says. ?In many cases, the satellite models were showing currents 180 degrees off from the currents we actually experienced, and off by a factor of two to three in speed. Our robots feel the first eight meters of ocean.? A drifter?a buoy that may submerge to a depth, then rise to the surface while tracking the path of a current?might detect a surface current, and a satellite might ?see? the first few inches of the ocean, but Vass says his robot gliders ?feel the full breadth of the current.? As such, the gliders ran through a series of eddies that were invisible to the satellites. They also crossed the equator where, according to satellite models, a huge shear current was thought to run east to west. Yet the flotilla experienced none of that. Upwellings, rising masses of water that can be small or enormous and that often carry deep ocean nutrients to the surface, were also in the wrong places compared to what the satellites indicated, he adds.

?The speed and directions of currents have major effects on the shipping industry, oil and gas and marine operations, as well as global weather,? Vass says. ?The robot gliders? ability to show measurements will change the way many of these industries work in the future.?

Others are more skeptical of the significance of the gliders? findings and point out that the limitations of satellite observations are already well known. Oscar Schofield, a Rutgers University professor of bio-optical oceanography thinks that Liquid Robotics is overstating the importance of its findings. ?I wouldn?t take such a negative tone,? he says. ?We?ve been well aware for a long time??since we put the satellites up??that they are limited. They are the only way to provide a global view of the ocean, albeit weighted to the surface, but they are still the most effective tool.?

The question is how to fill in the subsurface, 3-D structure, Schofield says. Robotic gliders?including those made by Liquid Robotics and Falmouth, Mass.-based Teledyne Webb Research?as well as scientific buoys like the Argos drifter are filling the data gap, he adds.

In June, Liquid Robotics? gliders also documented a more than 1,900-kilometer-long chlorophyll and plankton bloom?the largest ever and not usually seen that time of year?initially undetected by satellites. ?At this resolution, the chlorophyll bloom provides a groundbreaking link between scientific modeling and in-situ measurement and real-time data transmission,? says Liquid Robotics oceanographer Luke Beatman. The finding is significant because algae and phytoplankton are the base of the oceanic food chain and also regulate climate by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Commenting on algal bloom, Scott Glenn, a Rutgers University professor who specializes in physical oceanography, says he finds that ?the near-surface spatial maps of temperature and phytoplankton distributions obtained by satellite combined with the vertical profiles obtained from underwater profiling robots and gliders are very powerful observational tools, illuminating a chronically undersampled ocean that varies rapidly in space and time.?

Satellites provide maps of instants in time whereas surface wave gliders and underwater profiling gliders provide time series that move around underneath these maps, and can be redirected by these maps to the areas of greatest interest, Glenn says, adding that he prefers to use all three means simultaneously for ?sustained sampling trajectories through this unseen world.? Both Glenn and Schofield are part of Rutgers? Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences Coastal Ocean Observation Lab.

Papa Mau?s journey came to a close when it arrived in Bundaberg, Australia, on November 20, having weathered gale-force storms, fended off sharks, skirted around the Great Barrier Reef, and finally battled and surfed the East Australian Current to reach its destination Down Under. The robot gliders could change the economics of sea exploration and monitoring. The average research vessel costs $37,500 per day due to fuel, crew and maintenance, so an expedition like Papa Mau?s by ship could cost tens of millions of dollars. Instead, each robot glider costs up to $3,000 per day.

Next up, Liquid Robotics has chosen five teams of scientists to study the new data. Researchers from University of California Merced, University of California Santa Cruz, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of Texas and Boston-based software firm Wise Eddy will use the information to analyze the ocean?s health and respiration, its biomass and other information about organisms critical to ocean life.

The second robot glider, Benjamin, is expected to arrive in Australia in early 2013. The two others are being repaired in Hawaii and will eventually swim to Japan. Liquid Robotics is next contemplating a robot sub mission circumnavigating Antarctica.

Arduino Esplora helps you learn microcontrollers without the pesky breadboard

Arduino Esplora helps you learn microcontrollers without the pesky breadboard

Arduino is the go to board for most folks looking for an introduction to microcontrollers. That's largely thanks to its sizable community, ease of use and surprising versatility. But, there is one small stumbling block for those just looking to dip their toes in the ATmega-powered waters: you'll need to provide your own sensors, components and breadboard. (At least you will unless you're satisfied just making the built-in LED blink.) The Esplora bakes some of those essential bits and pieces right on to the board. It's crafted around the same core as the Leonardo, but adds an accelerometer, microphone, analog joystick, four buttons, a light sensor, temperature sensor, linear potentiometer and a buzzer to the mix. While the gamepad-like layout means you wont be able to connect to any of the dozens of Arduino shields out there, it does have a pair of TinkerKit inputs and outputs for expanding the Esplora's capabilities. There's also a place to connect an upcoming LCD module. The Esplora is available now direct from Arduino for €41.90.

Tips And Ideas About Your Commercial Real Estate Property ...

TIP! There are a variety of types of real estate brokers who deal in commercial properties. For example, full-service brokers represent both the landlord and tenants.

If you?re not sure where to start the search for a commercial property, finding one that fits the needs of your business may be very difficult. Keep reading for a handful of real estate tips and tricks.

TIP! Commercial loans, as compared to residential ones, require larger down payments. You need to research different lenders so that you can find the best one for you.

Changing interest rates are a big threat to people who invest in commercial real estate. Current economic conditions can make rates rise and fall with shocking unpredictability, which leaves investors open to the possibility of drastic increases in the interest rates. Think about this as you shop for properties.

TIP! Look into investing and buying bigger when you are thinking about buying commercial real estate. Although you may feel overwhelmed by the number of units you will be responsible for in a large building, it actually doesn?t take more work to take care of large buildings successfully.

Try to decrease potential events of defaults before negotiating a lease. The tenant will then be less likely to violate these terms. You do not want this to happen to you.

TIP! Confirm that basic utility services are already situated at the commercial property. You?ll need to have quick access to water, electricity, gas and the sewer.

Before hiring any real estate broker, read all of his disclosures. Try to beware of dual agency. Dual agency in real estate is when the agency works for both parties. This means that the agent is representing the interests of the lessor and lessee simultaneously. Dual agencies require full disclosure and must be agreed upon by both parties.

TIP! Once you have signed a new lease for a property, your next priority should be your rent strategy. The effectiveness of your strategy will have a significant impact on the success of your new investment.

Consider online references that contain information written for both real estate novices and veterans. You can never learn too much about commercial real estate, so make it your aim to always keep adding to your store of knowledge about the subject.

TIP! It?s likely that the property you buy will need some repairs and work before you move in. It could be as simple as a coat of paint or replacing some carpet.

If you?re signing a lease for commercial real estate, then hesitance pays off when asked to put your signature on any standard leasing form. Large corporations may add special requirements to the lease, which you need to take time to read. Thoroughly read the lease prior to signing to ensure there will be no surprises later.

TIP! Clarify how much space is available in square footage. Commercial real estate properties can be measured by usable square feet, which is where the business would actually take place, or total square footage, which usually involves the walls and uninhabitable spaces.

Devote your time and attention to only one type of investment at any given time. Your center of attention should be placed on a specific investment, whether it is an office building, land, apartments, retail, etc. Each type requires and deserves all of your undivided attention. You?re better off being an expert at one than you are being average at many.

TIP! This makes it easier to determine if the terms are consistent with the property?s rent roll and pro forma financial disclosures. If you fail to closely examine these terms, you may not notice that there are terms that were not thought about with regards to the rent roll, altering the pro forma.

Keep the smaller issuer for later on in your negotiations and the larger ones first, when you write a letter of intent. This approach lowers the overall tension level and actually makes it easier to reach agreement on the details at the end.

TIP! Ask for the credentials of any professional you?re planning to hire as an inspector, and ensure they are experienced in commercial real estate. You need to be especially diligent when it comes to hiring a pest control service, as many people who work in this field aren?t accredited.

When purchasing any type of commercial property, pay close attention to the location of the real estate. What type of neighborhood is the property in? Cross-check similar areas to see how they are growing. You need to be sure that in five to ten years later, the area will still be growing.

TIP! Learn how the firm you?re thinking about hiring measures their results. There are a number of details that will affect you critically, such as methods of negotiation, property selection criteria and the amount of space you need.

A borrower must be the one who orders an appraisal in a commercial real estate loan. The bank will not allow you to use it later. Therefore, to protect yourself and keep your commercial loan on track, order the appraisal yourself.

Develop the perception that you are an expert by beginning an online blog. This is a good way to attract potential buyers and tenants.

TIP! When making the selection of brokers to work with, be sure to find out how much experience they have on the commercial market. Choose one that specializes in your area of interest.

Locate the right financing first. Loans for commercial properties are not the same as home loans. These loans are actually a lot better in a number of ways. For instance, a commercial loan requires a bigger down payment, but that also means you don?t have to be liable if things don?t work out. Add to that the fact that the banks don?t care as much where you get that down payment from.

TIP! When you?re writing letters of intent, try to keep it brief by agreeing with the bigger issues initially and let the lesser issues be resolved at a later time. This way, negotiations will be smoother, and agreements on the small issues are more likely to be reached.

The purchase or sale of commercial property should now be a lot easier thanks to the advice contained in this article. With what you learned from this article, you can use it as a base and start to stay informed as you expand your knowledge on the real estate market.

Blue widgets are a complicated topic. This is the reason you should understand it before proceeding. Look over this article carefully and find out what you need to know before going any further. If you ever need some extra help, look back to this article.

Chavez faces new cancer battle, another operation

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez flew to Cuba on Monday for a third cancer operation after designating the vice president as his political heir.

State television showed images of Chavez hugging Vice President Nicolas Maduro and other aides before boarding the presidential jet.

Chavez raised a fist as he climbed the stairs alone. From the doorway of the plane, he waved and shouted "Long live our homeland!"

The president has said he will undergo cancer surgery in Havana in the coming days. Chavez, who had returned from Cuba early Friday, said on television Saturday that tests had found a return of "some malignant cells" in the same area where tumors were previously removed.

He also said for the first time that if he suffers complications, Maduro should be elected as Venezuela's leader to continue his socialist movement.

State television reported that Chavez departed for Cuba after 1 a.m. on Monday. Video of his departure was shown hours later.

"I hope to return soon," Chavez said at an earlier meeting with military commanders where he promoted his defense minister, Diego Molero, to the rank of admiral in chief.

Seated together at the presidential palace, Chavez showed Molero and other military commanders a golden sword that once belonged to independence hero Simon Bolivar. Chavez held the sword as he told the officers that he fully trusts them.

He also warned of potential conspiracies by enemies, both foreign and domestic.

"I'm totally sure that our homeland is safe," Chavez told them. He urged them "not to give in to intrigue."

Chavez, a former army paratroop commander who was first elected in 1998, won re-election in October and is due to be sworn in for a new six-year term on Jan. 10.

Lawmakers on Sunday voted unanimously to grant Chavez permission to leave the country for the operation.

He has called his relapse a "new battle" and said there are risks. It will be his third operation to remove cancerous tissue in about a year and a half.

The president underwent surgery for an unspecified type of pelvic cancer in Cuba in June 2011, after an earlier operation for a pelvic abscess. He had another cancer surgery last February after a tumor appeared in the same area. He has also undergone chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Chavez said in July that tests showed he was cancer-free. But he had recently reduced his public appearances and on Nov. 27 returned to Cuba for hyperbaric oxygen treatment. Such treatment is regularly used to help heal tissues damaged by radiation treatment.

Chavez's supporters poured into city plazas across the nation on Sunday to pray for his recovery. Some wiped tears, while others held photos of him and chanted in unison: "Ooh-Ah! Chavez isn't going away!"

Several Latin American leaders sent messages wishing Chavez a speedy recovery. Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa, a close ally, announced on Twitter Monday morning that he was traveling to Havana to visit with Chavez.

Bunting's Laws of Investing | The Big Picture

Brett Arend recently informed us of the passing of Dan Bunting, a man who ?successfully managed money on behalf of private individuals and institutions for nearly 40 years.?

Over the years, Bunting had developed a series of rules that governed his investing strategies.

Here is the short version of Bunting?s Laws:

1. Sell stocks of companies that announce huge acquisitions, that overdiversify, or that spend a fortune on a lavish new headquarters.

2. Avoid stocks where management picks fights with analysts (or, by extension, hedge funds). See Overstock.com in 2005; Netflix in 2010.

3. Watch out when executives start selling a lot of stock ? regardless of plausible-sounding excuses. Top execs in homebuilders, mortgage underwriters and Wall Street dumped billions before the 2008 crash.

4. ?Run a mile? from all stocks in an industry going through a huge investment boom: Massive overcapacity and consequent collapse is inevitable.

5. Steer clear of investing in manufacturing companies. Their industries are usually plagued with extreme cycles of boom and bust, overcapacity and slumps.

6. Pay little attention to economists or market gurus.

7. Mistrust all mathematical trading formulas as well ? they invariably fail just when you most need them to work.

8. Look for companies where the insiders are buying lots of stock.

9. Look for companies generating a lot of cash ? a great sign of sustained outperformance.

10. Look for companies which have monopolies (or near monopolies), and those which manage to take out their main competitors.

11. Remember you are buying businesses, not just stocks. Pay close attention to the quality of the business, and especially the quality of the management.

12. Look for companies which have earned the trust of consumers, and which have very strong brand names.

Good list Brett, thanks for sharing.
